PHEAA Reminds Students of Upcoming August PA Grant Deadlines

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
PHEAA is reminding first-time PA State Grant applicants planning to attend a community college during the 2019-20 academic year that the program’s application deadline is August 1.

Additionally, students who are first-time applicants enrolled in a 2-year program of study at business school, trade or technical schools, hospital schools of nursing and community, junior or 4-year colleges or universities who are enrolled in a non-transferable program of study must also submit their State Grant applications by August 1.

Students enrolled in the 2019 summer semester are required to complete the summer application by August 15.

“The PA State Grant Program is an important part of a successful higher education funding plan for thousands of students throughout the Commonwealth,” said Representative Mike Peifer, PHEAA Board Chairman. “With a maximum grant award of $4,123, the Program reduces the need for students to borrow money to pay for college, helping to lower or eliminate their student loan debt burden after graduation.”

PA State Grant applicants must meet all eligibility requirements, including being enrolled at least half-time in an approved course of study. More information on the program, including a complete list of eligibility requirements, can be found at pheaa.org/funding-opportunities/state-grant-program.

To determine eligibility for a PA State Grant award, applicants must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a State Grant Form (SGF), which collects additional information not requested on the federal application. Completing the SGF is only required for first-time State Grant applicants. Applicants can access the FAFSA at either PHEAA.org/FAFSA or fafsa.gov. First-time applicants can access the SGF directly from the FAFSA on the Web, allowing them to easily complete the entire process from a single website.

Students who have already submitted their FAFSA but not their SGF will need to visit their Account Access through the Secure Sign-In at PHEAA.org to complete their SGF.

“Students and their families need to understand the different financial aid options that are available to them,” said Senator Wayne Fontana, PHEAA Vice Chairman. “The key is to focus on grants and scholarships first since they do not need to be repaid, before considering any kind of a loan. Then, they must make sure they complete their applications before the submission deadline or they risk missing out on money that would have otherwise been qualified to receive.”

For information on the higher education financial aid process, schedules for financial aid nights and FAFSA Completion Sessions, reminders of financial aid deadlines, and videos offering tips and information pertaining to planning for higher education, students can join PHEAA on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pheaa.aid.

Pottsville Man Sentenced for Role in Methamphetamine Trafficking Conspiracy

Clik here to view.
A man from Pottsville was sentenced this week for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Anibal Luis Rodriguez, age 28, who resided in Pottsville, Reading, and Allentown during the time of the offense, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani to 20 years’ imprisonment for participating in a methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, the defendant previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine between July 2016 and May 2017.

Judge Mariani explained that he imposed the sentence because of the nature and extent of the drug trafficking operation headed by Rodriguez, including the torture of a woman who was held captive by members of the conspiracy for three days in a shed located on a co-conspirator’s property.

Judge Mariani also ordered Rodriguez to serve five years on supervised release following his prison sentence.

Rodriguez was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2017, as a result of an investigation by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police, and local police in Schuylkill County. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

With football games and school starting in less than a month, the North Schuylkill Spartan Band was working on their overall fitness to help improve their performances.

For the second year in a row, North Schuylkill High School Band Director William Lennox has turned to physical trainer, Ed Pavalko, to help his band members keep the same level of energy throughout their performances.

"People don't realize that running around the field in a wool uniform, playing instruments, having all that coordination actually takes a lot of energy.  In year's past, we haven't been able to make the same impact at the end of our show that we did at the beginning, so last year we brought it Ed Pavalko to get us all in shape, and it turned out to be our best season last year" said Lennox.

Pavalko had students focus on their cardio with jogging, walking, high knees, jumping jacks, bursts of running, and other exercises that focused on longevity.

"The focus of the exercises were for them to pace themselves and play that 7 minute show without tiring"  said Pavalko.

Lennox said that they will be incorporating the exercises they learned today into their daily 4 hour practices until the season starts.

As Football Season Approaches, Spartan Stadium Turf Project Eyes Goal Line

A project at North Schuylkill's Spartan Stadium in Fountain Springs that is almost a year in the making is almost to the goal line.

After the rain that fell during the spring, summer, and fall of 2018, the Spartan's field had become unsafe for their all-purpose stadium.

The district was left with the task to replace the grass on the field with a price tag of over $200,000 or look at options of installing turf, which has been discussed for over a decade.

In December 2018, the North Schuylkill School Board approved a $1,119,337.92 project with FieldTurf USA Inc. to replace the current field with a synthetic turf field.

At the end of the school year, in June, ground was broken on the project.

Through the past two months, crews have been working on digging out the old field and preparing the ground for the turf installation.

On Wednesday, the first rolls of the new turf were installed.

According to crews at the field, 15 rolls of turf were installed Wednesday and a total of 46 rolls will be installed when the project completes.

The project is reported to be on schedule and the field will be ready for the Spartan's first game at home in Week 2 of the season against Shamokin.

Sunday afternoons were spent at "the farm" with the ride home singing old time favorites such as "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". He shared his love of fishing, gardening, searching for rams' head mushrooms, the outdoors and making his famous clam chowder.
