Lehigh Valley Hospital - Schuylkill Awarded RRPD Grant

Clik here to view.
On Thursday, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill a $749,859 Rural Residency Planning and Development Program (RRPD) grant.

This is part of a larger $20 million distribution across 21 states. Each RRPD recipient receives up to $750,000 over a three-year period to develop new rural residency programs while achieving accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

“Promoting the health of rural America is one of the Trump Administration’s healthcare priorities,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “Supporting the training of healthcare providers in rural areas through grants like these is a key way to help expand rural access to care, and is part of an overall effort to support rural healthcare in sustainable, innovative, and flexible ways.”

The RRPD program, administered by HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) and Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW), is part of a multi-year initiative by HRSA to expand the physician workforce in rural areas by developing new, sustainable residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry. The recipients of the awards include rural hospitals, community health centers, health centers operated by the Indian Health Service, Indian tribes or tribal organizations, and schools of medicine.

“The health challenges in rural America are clear: rural communities face a greater risk of poor health outcomes than their urban counterparts,” said HRSA Administrator George Sigounas, MS, Ph.D. “Programs like the Rural Residency Planning and Development grants take aim at one of the most persistent disparities: access to high quality healthcare providers. HRSA is committed to increasing the number of providers serving rural communities and improving health in rural America.”

“Today is an important day for rural health care in Pennsylvania,” said Lawrence Riddles, MD, Regional Chief Medical Officer at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill and Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazelton. “We have an aging physician population in Pennsylvania and especially in Schuylkill County. Statistics show that many medical residents choose to practice close to where they did their residency. So this is a great opportunity to introduce this area to Family Medicine residents and help create our next generation of care providers for our community.”

Rural residency programs often face challenges in securing sustainable financing and faculty support. The RRPD grant award funding will help recipients address these challenges.

"Training residents in rural areas is one strategy shown to successfully encourage graduates to practice in rural settings," said HRSA Associate Administrator for FORHP Tom Morris. “The rural residency grants set up these 27 future residency programs for success.”

“We know that clinicians who train in rural settings are more likely to continue to practice there after they complete their residencies,” said HRSA Associate Administrator for BHW Dr. Luis Padilla. “Rural communities are more likely to have a shortage of health professionals. The rural residency grants are one more way HRSA is helping to expand the health workforce and increase access to quality healthcare for these communities.”

Ringtown Man Sentenced for Role in Heroin Trafficking Conspiracy

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced on Friday that Thomas Nestor, 41, of Ringtown, was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Court Judge James M. Munley to 47 months’ imprisonment and to serve four years on supervised release for his role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, Nestor previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. Nestor admitted to distributing heroin and transporting other drug traffickers to Hazleton and other locations to obtain large quantities of heroin on multiple occasions. Nestor was involved in transporting and distributing between 400 grams and 700 grams of heroin, which is equivalent to 16,000 and 28,000 retail bags of heroin.

The matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and local police in Schuylkill County. Nestor was one of 11 people charged in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

This case was also brought as part of a district wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic regarding the use and distribution of heroin. Led by the United States Attorney’s Office, the Heroin Initiative targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is part of a coordinated effort among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit heroin related offenses.

Recycling Event Collects Hundreds of Pounds of Electronics

A recycling event on Saturday collected hundreds of pounds of electronics.

On Saturday, the Northern Schuylkill County of Governments held their first electronic recycling event at Skytop Coal in New Boston, Mahanoy Township, near Mahanoy City.

“We wanted to give our residents the opportunity to dispose of electronic items in a safe, legal manner,” noted NSCOG Chairman Champ Holman, “It’s become increasingly difficult to dispose of some items, televisions in particular, so this will be a great opportunity for people to get rid of many types of unwanted items for a nominal fee."

The event was held in conjunction with the Boroughs of Ashland, Girardville, Gordon, Mahanoy City, Shenandoah and the Townships of Butler, Delano, Mahanoy, Ryan, Schuylkill and West Mahanoy Township.

Volunteers were on hand from each of communities involved to help unload vehicles.

"A lot of the people want to do the right thing, but don't know what to do with them.  Our little outreach here goes a long way", said TJ Stinson, of TotalRecycle Inc.

Stinson said "These items will be properly broken down and most of the resources we collect will be used again".

Over 100 people brought items to the event such as televisions, kitchen appliances, vacuums, computers, and more.

Some communities such as Gordon and Schuylkill Township held their own events prior and brought their items by the truckload.

Volunteers from Schuylkill Haven and Pitman also brought items to the event after cleaning up abandoned items from their own communities.

"A lot of people appreciated this event", said Mary Beth Dougherty, NSCOG Secretary/Treasurer.
Organizers thanked Ettore D'iCasimirro and Skytop Coal for allowing them to use his location on Morea Road as the location to hold the event.
