In a release from Meuser's office, it states the grants will be used to purchase a 2019 Ford Police Interceptor with equipment and a Ford F-250 XL Truck and Plow. The plow truck will also enable increased road service during inclement weather.

“The significant funding awarded to Mahanoy City will help to promote a safer home for residents and increase coverage for its police force,” said Meuser. “Safety is a top priority in our district and I will continue to advocate for expanded resources to provide law enforcement with the tools they need for success.”

“The Borough of Mahanoy City would like to thank Tonya St. Clair, loan specialist from the Lehigh Area Office of the U.S Department of Agriculture, and Congressman Meuser’s office for their assistance in obtaining this grant,” said Cindy Soley, Mahanoy City Borough Manager. “We are deeply appreciative of this federal funding and look forward to their continued support in the future in helping our municipality grow and serve our citizens more effectively.”

A man and juvenile female are locked up in Schuylkill County Prison after assaulting a man and slashing him with a knife.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojciechowsky,  on Tuesday July 9, 2019 around, 12:15am, Officer Tina Sullivan was assisting a disabled vehicle in the area of East Norwegian Street and South Jackson Street when she was handed a cell phone that a female had found lying in the street.

During the investigation to locate the owner of the cell phone, information received led to a 26 year old Pottsville man who was currently at a local medical facility receiving treatment for a laceration on his face that had occurred in an assault a short time prior.

A further investigation revealed that the 26 year old man had gone to 906 W. Race Street with two other people after he had received several text messages requesting he do so.

At that address Saye Nehwon Kilikpo, 29, of Macungie, PA, asked the man to walk to the rear of the house to talk with him.

At the back of the house, Kilikpo pulled out a black handgun from his waistband and put it under the victim’s chin. While Kilikpo was doing this a 17 year old Minersville female juvenile was holding a knife and telling everyone she would stab them if they tried to interfere.

Kilikpo then told the female juvenile to take the victim’s cellphone and wallet which she did. The victim then knocked the gun out of Kilikpo’s hand they both tried to gain control of it on the floor.

The victim then ran out of the house with his two companions and began to get into a parked car.

Kilikpo pursued the victim and as the juvenile female held the car door open Kilikpo slashed the victim across the face with a knife before he and the juvenile fled the area.

Police located the female victim a short time later in a parked car in the 2200 block of West Market Street in Pottsville and she was taken into custody.

Kilipko was located in the 1000 block of West Market Street where he was taken into custody and transported back to City Hall.

Interviews were completed with several witnesses to the Robbery and Assault and after consulting with Schuylkill County District Attorney Mike O’Pake it was determined that the female would be charged as an adult due to the severity of the crimes committed.

Sullivan prepared a criminal complaint charging the 17 year old female with Felony Strong Arm Robbery, Felony Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Strong Arm Robbery, Felony Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Theft by Unlawful Taking, Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Theft, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Receiving Stolen Property, and Possession instruments of a crime.

A Criminal Complaint was also prepared charging Kilikpo with Felony Strong Arm Robbery, Felony Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Strong Arm Robbery, Felony Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Theft by Unlawful Taking, Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Theft, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Receiving Stolen Property, Corruption of Minors, Possession instruments of a crime, and Possession of Prohibited offensive weapon.

Both Kilipko and the juvenile female were arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Reiley who set bail for the female at $75,000 cash and $150,000 cash bail for Kilikpo.

Following arraignment both were committed to the Schuylkill County Prison.

Police also determined that the 26 year old male victim was wanted for a State Parole violation and following the completion of this medical treatment he was taken into custody and committed to SCI Frackville.

PA Health Secretary Adds Anxiety Disorders and Tourette Syndrome to Medical Marijuana Program Serious Medical Conditions

$

On Thursday, Pennsylvania Department of Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine announced that effective July 20, anxiety disorders and Tourette syndrome will be approved serious medical conditions in the medical marijuana program based on the recommendation of the Medical Marijuana Advisory Board and a review of medical research on the use of marijuana to treat these conditions.
“After a careful review of the medical literature available about these conditions, I have decided to approve this recommendation,” Dr. Levine said. “Patients should consult with their health care provider to see if medical marijuana will be beneficial for them. I do not take this decision lightly, and do have recommendations for physicians, dispensary pharmacists and patients in terms of the use of medical marijuana to treat these conditions. For both conditions, medical marijuana is not first line treatment and should not replace traditional therapies but should be used in conjunction with them, when recommended by a physician.”

Dr. Levine advised that patients with anxiety disorders should continue to pursue counseling and therapy to manage their illness. She said that research indicates medical marijuana with low THC and high CBD content are more effective for treatment of anxiety disorders and is recommended for short-term use.

“In addition, medical marijuana is not recommended to treat children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, as their brains are still developing,” Dr. Levine said.

Dr. Levine also warned that pregnant women with any of the approved serious medical conditions should not use medical marijuana as the impacts on the fetus are unknown.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health today also held a research summit for medical marijuana, bringing together the eight universities and three approved clinical registrants to discuss what medical marijuana research will look like in Pennsylvania.

The research program, guided by Act 43 of 2018, allows for eight clinical registrants who each must hold both a grower/processor and a dispensary permit. Clinical registrants must also have a research contract with one of eight approved academic clinical research centers.

There are close to 111,000 active patient certifications as part of the medical marijuana program. More than 1,600 physicians have registered for the program, more than 1,160 of whom have been approved as practitioners.

The medical marijuana program was signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf on April 17, 2016. Since that time, the department has:
  • Completed temporary regulations to enact the program;
  • Convened the Medical Marijuana Advisory Board;
  • Approved six training providers for physician continuing education;
  • Approved four laboratories to test medication before it is delivered to patients;
  • Registered nearly 165,000 total patients and issued more than 137,000 identification cards;
  • Validated more than 1.3 million dispensing events with more than 3.7 million products sold;
  • Issued 25 grower/processors permits, 18 of which are operational;
  • Issued 50 dispensary permits and approved 54 locations to begin operations;
  • Certified eight medical schools as Academic Clinical Research Centers; and
  • Approved three clinical registrants.
The medical marijuana program offers medical marijuana to patients who are residents of Pennsylvania and under a practitioner’s care for the treatment of a serious medical condition as defined by the Medical Marijuana Law.

On Saturday, thousands of people took part in the 190th Anniversary celebration of Yuengling in Pottsville.

The event kicked off at 1:00pm at the Yuengling Brewery and Gift Shop. Hundreds of people packed a well stocked beer garden for a taste of Yuengling straight from the brewery itself.  The gift shop was filled with Yuengling fans from all over, purchasing their favorite garb. With each sale, 5% went to Pottsville's Continued Progress Project.

There, the Sixth Generation Yuengling sisters stood talking to fans and welcoming them to the celebration.

"It's great to have the day finally be here.  It's a beautiful day out, its nice to see everyone coming from everywhere. It's awesome!" said Sheryl Yuengling.

"It's a proud day for the city of Pottsville.  For all the hard work that everybody did, coming together, we are honored that people are spending their time and efforts.  We are glad people are enjoying themselves" said Debbie Yuengling.

Those who purchased VIP tickets for the event were treated to a special tour of the brewery and reception in the brewery's tasting room.

Local band,The Boys Upstairs hit Stage A first at 1:30, located in front of the brewery. Vendors lined the streets from the brewery, down Mahantango Street, then down 2nd Street, and West Norwegian Street.

Food trucks lined Progress Avenue from East Norwegian Street to the Main Stage on Laurel Boulevard.

Always up for a good time, local band Toolshed Jack was the next band up and began playing at 4:00pm.

Hooligan hit the main stage as the opening act at 6:00pm, as the thousands who enjoyed the celebration all came together.

After an hour long set, Hooligan lead singer, Keith Collins welcomed the Yuengling sisters to the stage.

Jennifer, Wendy, Sheryl, and Debbie made their way  to the stage each with a Yuengling beer in hand and toasted the crowd and thanked everyone for coming to celebrate.

"On behalf of my sisters and my dad, we are so thrilled to celebrate our 190th anniversary right here in the city of Pottsville with you, our Yuengling fans.  At 190 Years, there are not a lot of companies that can say that." said Debbie Yuengling.

"Please join us, raise a glass, we are going toast everyone who works so hard to make today possible and to you all for getting us here, to 190 years" toasted Debbie.

A short time later,national known band,  Better than Ezra hit the stage with fans gathering together, to enjoy the last band of the already jam packed day.

The New Orleans based, 90's alternative band  played their hits "Good" and "Desperately Wanting" and covered songs such as "Tiny Dancer", "I'm Gonna Be", and covered songs by world wide popular band,  Rush.

The night concluded with fireworks provided by the City of Pottsville and displayed by Bixler Pyrotechnics, Ashland.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojciechowsky, on July 12 2019, just after 8:00pm, the Pottsville Bureau of Police responded to the 400 block of East Market St in reference to a male who had been stabbed.

Officers arrived at this location and located an 18 year old Pottsville male.

The victim was bleeding extensively from the chest and told officers that he had been stabbed by a male who he identified as Christopher James Rojas, 17, of Pottsville.
