Life Flight Implements New Maintenance Software to Get Back into Service Faster

When emergency care is needed, every minute counts, and that means having air medical services at the ready. Geisinger Life Flight is now able to launch their helicopters back into service faster with digital signatures maintenance software.

Following state and federal regulatory approval, Life Flight is now utilizing WinAir Version 7, which features digital signature functionality. Using digital signatures provides Life Flight mechanics and pilots the ability to electronically sign-off on maintenance tasks and job completion.

"Investing in and using innovative technology is part of the natural evolution of who we are as an organization,” said Jeff Gazey, Geisinger Life Flight director of aviation maintenance. “The journey to having digital signatures took more than a year and included updating policies and procedures, working closely with IT staff and securing government regulatory approvals. We worked step-by-step with WinAir as the product was developed and are thrilled to have it in place and up and running.”

Previously, maintenance work was logged on digital task cards, but those task cards needed to be printed out and signed, and then uploaded back into a digital format. With digital signatures, maintenance work signoffs are all done electronically, saving time, paper and money.

“Digital signatures make our maintenance processes more efficient and get our aircraft back into service faster so we’re ready to care for people in need,” said Jerry Splitt, Geisinger Life Flight program director. “Implementing digital signatures will save more than 2,200 hours of labor and nearly $10,000 in labor costs and office supplies annually. We can take these savings and reinvest them into our program to continue providing exceptional care to our patients in central and northeastern Pennsylvania.”

Life Flight has utilized WinAir software since 2012 and worked closely with the organization to upgrade to WinAir Version 7. This new version includes digital signatures that create a unique digital record in WinAir, which securely associates the approval with the user. When maintenance work is completed, mechanics must review the work and accredit it by adding their signatures to the task card, followed by an assessment and approval by an inspector. This process safeguards against the entry of inaccurate data and increases safety, as any follow-up modifications made to the task or check will invalidate the authentication and require re-authentication.

“Digital signatures will assist Geisinger’s maintenance team tremendously by accelerating and streamlining maintenance work steps, while simultaneously ensuring data integrity,” said Kyle Vergeer, WinAir managing director. “We are thrilled that Geisinger has decided to use this feature for their fleet maintenance program and are pleased to learn that the Department of Health and the FAA have granted them approval. We foresee that digital signatures will be a significant benefit to the entire operation at Geisinger Life Flight.”

Life Flight maintenance operations occur at the program’s hangar in Danville on the Geisinger Medical Center campus. This month, Life Flight 1 relocated from that hangar to a new base at Penn Valley Airport near Selinsgrove. The relocation allowed for more space at the GMC hangar to accommodate the program’s maintenance needs. Life Flight’s other bases include University Park Airport near State College, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport in Avoca, Williamsport Regional Airport in Montoursville, Minersville, and Jake Arner Airport in Lehighton.

Life Flight is the second largest air medical transportation program in Pennsylvania, featuring nine air ambulances and a critical care ground transport unit. The program operates six bases around-the-clock throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania and employs a staff of approximately 130. Life Flight is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS).

Scranton Mayor Pleads Guilty To Corruption Charges

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Scranton Mayor William L. Courtright, age 61, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty today to a criminal information charging him with three felony public corruption offenses. The guilty pleas were entered before Chief United States District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner in Williamsport where Judge Conner was presiding over a trial in an unrelated matter. Before entering his guilty pleas, Courtright resigned from his position as Mayor of Scranton.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, the criminal information charges Courtright with engaging in a multi-year conspiracy with unidentified individuals to take bribes from vendors who did business with the City. The information also alleges that other objectives of the conspiracy were to commit the offenses of attempted extortion under color of official right and extortion through use of fear of economic harm.

Courtright’s corrupt activities came to light during a multi-year undercover investigation headed by the FBI. The undercover investigation revealed that the former mayor accepted cash payments from vendors doing business with the city in a pay-to-play scheme.

“In this County, in this Commonwealth, in this Country – our elected officials work for us,” said U.S. Attorney Freed. “Not the other way around. Using public office for personal financial gain is a crime, plain and simple. All citizens, not just those of us in law enforcement, should demand that our public officials scrupulously follow the law. And when they do not, no matter how difficult the investigations may be, or how long they may take, the United States Department of Justice and our law enforcement partners will hold them to account. I want to commend the painstaking work of our partners at the FBI who have never wavered in their commitment to the citizens of this district. We are also grateful for the valuable assistance of IRS-Criminal Investigations and the Pennsylvania State Police. We will not rest in the fight against corruption.”

“Bill Courtright used the city of Scranton,” said Michael T. Harpster, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division. “He traded on his office in exchange for money and other valuable favors. He wielded his official powers for his own benefit, when he should’ve been focused on that of his community. The FBI will never stop seeking to bring to justice corrupt public officials who so badly betray the public trust. To that end, we and our partners at the Pennsylvania State Police and the IRS have launched a task force specifically to take on public corruption in the northeast Pennsylvania region. We’re working on behalf of the people, who expect — and deserve — honest services from all their elected officials.”

The FBI was assisted during the investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorneys Michael Consiglio, Michelle Olshefski and William Houser are prosecuting the case.

Criminal Informations are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is 35 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judge is also required to consider and weigh a number of factors, including the nature, circumstances and seriousness of the offense; the history and characteristics of the defendant; and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for the defendant's educational, vocational and medical needs. For these reasons, the statutory maximum penalty for the offense is not an accurate indicator of the potential sentence for a specific defendant.

A Pottsville woman led police in a high speed pursuit through multiple Schuylkill County communities Tuesday afternoon.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojciechowsky, on 7/2/2109 police responded to a disturbance call involving Sheena Whitacre 34, of Pottsville, at the Children and Youth building on North Centre Street in Pottsville.

Around 4:45pm, Whitacre left the scene and officers observed her make a right on red, from Centre St. onto Laurel Blvd, in her Silver Honda Civic without yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Police attempted to initiate a vehicle stop in the 300 blk. of Terry Reiley Way when Whitacre made an improper turn in front of oncoming traffic and drove away north on Terry Reiley Way, fleeing into oncoming traffic. Whitacre then turned right onto Nichols St., while continuing to pass other vehicles by driving on the wrong side of the roadway into oncoming traffic.

Whitacre then drove to Millcreek Ave. and made a left turn to go north on SR 61, operating at a high rate of speed. Whitacre then made a left turn off of SR 61 onto Ann St. almost striking another vehicle. Whitacre then drove west on Ann St. and failed to stop at the intersection with Oak St., and the entrance to the Fairlane Village Mall. Whitacre continued to drive on Ann St. at a high rate of speed back towards Pottsville. Whitacre then approached the intersection of Nichols St. and Mill Creek Ave, where she failed to stop at another stop sign. Whitacre then made a right turn onto Nichols St., traveling west towards Centre St. When Whitacre approached the intersection with Centre St. she failed to stop before continuing through the intersection, almost striking several other vehicles.

Whitacre made a right onto N. Centre St. and then made a left turn onto Peacock St.

While negotiating the turn onto Peacock St., Whitacre intentionally hit another vehicle with her vehicle, to avoid oncoming traffic. After striking the other vehicle, she continued to drive her vehicle west on Peacock St at a high rate of speed. At the intersection of Peacock St. and Walter Griffith Ave., Whitacre was stopped behind another vehicle. Officers then pulled a marked police vehicle behind her, at which time Whitacre put her vehicle in reverse and intentionally struck the police car which was occupied by two Pottsville Bureau of Police officers. Whitacre then fled again by driving onto Seltzer Rd. at a high rate of speed, continuing to drive into oncoming traffic.

Whitacre then drove into Minersville and through the intersection with 901 continuing at a high rate of speed through the intersection with multiple other vehicles at the intersection. Whitacre then drove on Sunbury St. to the intersection of 2nd St., where she became stopped behind another vehicle at which time Whitacre drove around traffic and continued west on Sunbury St. at a high rate of speed out of Minersville, once again driving in the oncoming lane of traffic.

Whitacre continued to operate her vehicle at a high rate of speed on SR 901 and then onto several local roadways. On Deep Creek Rd. at the Barry Twp. line , Whitacre’s vehicle slowed down and officers were able to surround her vehicle. Whitacre was then taken into custody without further incident.

A criminal complaint was prepared by Ptlm. Christopher Hamilton charging Whitacre with Felony Fleeing and Eluding, 2 counts of Felony Aggravated Assault, One count Felony Aggravated Assault, three counts simple assault and multiple traffic violations.

She was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Ferrier who set bail at $20,000 straight cash and Whitacre was then committed to SCP, unable to post bail.

Wojciechowsky said no injuries were reported.

Pottsville Police were assisted in the incident by officers from Ashland Police, Branch Township Police, Butler Township Police, Cass Township Police, Hegins Police, New Castle Police, New Philadelphia Police, and St. Clair Police.

-----------------------------------------------------

The rich and joyful life of Margaret Agnes Fermier Fromme came to its close on July 2, 2019 at Providence Place. She was 101 years old.

Born at home in Pottsville on June 29, 1918, Margaret was the daughter of William Scheipe Fermier and Mary Josephine Hontz Fermier, and the sister of William Hontz Fermier.

Margaret attended Garfield Elementary School and Pottsville Junior High School. She graduated from Pottsville High School in 1936, a member of the first class to spend all four years at the school’s current – then brand new -- location. A gifted pianist like her father, Margaret played piano for the school’s musical performances.

In 1937, Margaret graduated from Pierce Business School in Philadelphia, returned to Pottsville, and began working at the Coal and Iron Company.

On October 16, 1938, Margaret married Galen Fromme, whom she had met in the 1920s at the English Lutheran Church, then at 6th and West Market Streets.

In 1939, the couple moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where Margaret’s husband began a 40-year career as a broadcaster and news director with WBAL radio and TV.

In 1943, they bought the house on Tred Avon Road in Baltimore’s Stoneleigh neighborhood, where Margaret and Galen raised their three sons.

In 1966, when her children were no longer living at home, Margaret went back to work as the principal’s secretary at Summit Park Elementary School in Pikesville, Maryland. In 1978, she became administrative secretary to the Director of Transportation at the Baltimore County Board of Education, a position she held until her retirement in 1985.

That same year, Margaret – now a widow -- moved back to Pottsville, the hometown she loved. She became an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and – until she was 88 -- performed with the church’s senior dance group. She loved exercising and dancing, and was pleased to have named their ensemble, “The Excerettes.”

She is survived by her three sons: William of Davidsonville, MD; Benjamin (Kay) of Columbia, MD; and Daniel of Columbia, MD; grandchildren Brian, Eric (Brenda), Mary, and Maya; great grandchildren Raymond and Linda; a cousin, nieces, and nephews.

Margaret did not want a funeral or memorial service. A private graveside ceremony will occur at the Charles Baber Cemetery in Pottsville, where she will rest with her husband, her parents, her grandparents, her aunt, and her brother and sister-in-law. She would be happy to accept donations in her name to Trinity Lutheran Church Senior Coordinator Fund in Pottsville, or – lifelong, devoted animal lover that she was -- to the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville. Arrangements are under the care of James B. Humphrey, F.D. James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville

Please share your memories and condolences with Margaret's family by signing the guest book at www.jehumphreyfuneralhome.com

Her family and friends will miss her many special gifts: for fun, music, friendship, joy, her love of animals, her gratitude. In the picture here, she’s blowing out the candles on the cake at her joyful 100th birthday party just a year ago.

Helenann (Welker) Zelonis, 68 of St. Clair, died Wednesday July 3, 2019, at Genesis Health Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.

She was born at Locust Mountain Hospital, Shenandoah, on June 3, 1951, the first child of the late James Jr. and Helen R. (Verbosky) Welker.

Growing up in Hometown, she graduated from Tamaqua Area High School in 1969 and received her diploma in Practical Nursing from Schuylkill County AVTS, Pottsville, in 1971. From 1971 to 1976 and 1978 to 2012 she was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic (now Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill, South Jackson Street). She also briefly worked at the former Rest Haven (now Rosewood) and as a private duty nurse. She said she would have stayed on longer, were it not for her difficulties with her health and computer documentation.

Helen was known to take younger nurses under her wing, to start difficult IVs by praying a Hail Mary, and to unleash her offbeat sense of humor. She was kind to many, including her old Saint Casimir friends in their declining years, hospital colleagues and their children, and her family. She had various pastimes: hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, playing Bingo, driving around with her husband or son, going on casino trips, vacationing or lounging in the pool with her brother and sister-in-law, and watching TV with family pets.

Helen had been a member of the former Saint Casimir Parish, Saint Clair, where she was a member and officer of the Rosary Confraternity, and a faithful pierogi maker. She continued faithful attendance and pierogi making at Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint Clair, up to the day she entered the hospital and eventually transitioned to Schuylkill Center, where she resided for the past 16 months. From her teenage years she loved her Catholic faith and was honored that her only child became a priest.

Helenann was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Zelonis in 2004.

Von Dohren Gets Third Win of the Season at Big Diamond

$

Fighting the weather throughout the day, Big Diamond Speedway was able to get in one of their biggest nights of the season as the track presented the annual George Stevenson Memorial race as part of B & H Landscaping night.
With $5000 going to the winner of the 50 lap race for the Insinger Performance Modifieds, you knew Craig Von Dohren would be on his game looking to cash in on the extra money and on his game he was as Von Dohren dominated the race to take his third checkered flag of the season.

Matt Stangle would take the early lead from his third starting spot with Von Dohren also on the move quickly and was up to fourth already on lap one after starting ninth. Stangle continues to lead but by lap five Von Dohren was starting to apply pressure to the young driver looking for the top spot.

The first caution of the race was displayed on lap six with Stangle still out front. Stangle continued to lead the way on the restart with the PA big three right behind as Von Dohren, Jeff Strunk and Duane Howard were now second thru fourth. Another yellow came out on lap eight and on the restart a multi-car tangle coming to the green forced the red flag to be displayed as Rick Laubach did a slow roll before coming to a stop on his side. All drivers were okay.

After a couple of more attempts to restart the race the action finally resumed with Stangle still leading the way. With everyone glued to the bottom of the track, Von Dohren decided to move to the high side. By the end of the lap eleven, Von Dohren was your new leader and started to check out on the field.

A scheduled fuel stop on lap 25 brought the field back together with Von Dohren leading Stangle, Strunk, Howard and Frank Cozze. During the fuel stop top ten runner Billy Pauch Jr decided to head to the pits and change a right rear tire.

When the race resumed Von Dohren once again took off leaving little doubt who was in charge of the race. Von Dohren would move his line around the track as Stangle and Strunk would make up some ground when Von Dohren ran down low. Once Von Dohren moved back to the top he was gone and easily sped under starter Jeff Merkel’s checkered flag with a commanding lead to take the big $5000 first place prize. Another good run for the young Stangle who finished second for the second consecutive week. Strunk, Howard and Cozze completes the top five.

In the 20-lap USS Achey Sportsman division it was Brandon Edgar reaching victory lane for the second time in 2019. Second place starter Wayne Witmer took the lead at the start from his second starting spot with the teenager Cole Stangle moving up to second.

The first yellow of the race was put out on lap four with four-time winner this season Doug Hendricks involved. Witmer continued to lead when the field returned to green with Stangle and Edgar right behind. Edgar worked his way past Stangle and on lap seven went by Witmer to take over the top spot. Once in front Edgar would go on to control the race surviving one more restart to tale the win. Stangle would finish second with Witmer, Tim Fitzpatrick and Hendricks who returned to finish fifth.

They say that sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good and on Friday night in the Savage 61 Road Runner feature event Shaun Mulhall was good, but it still took a little bit of luck to grab the win. Kris Ney grabbed the early lead as a great battle was developing behind him between Jim Kost, Chris Holland and Matt Ney. The race would stay green as Holland moves up to second and battle Kris Ney for the lead. Ney and Holland would take the two to go flags side by side with Holland taking command. As the two leaders take the white flag, they get together going into turn one with both cars spinning to bring out the only caution of the race. Mulhall inherited the lead at that point and went on to win the race. Holland stormed back through the field to finish second with Mike Reichert, Kost and Kris Ney the top five.
