George E. “Pork Chop” Rittle, 85, of South West Street, Shenandoah, passed away peacefully with his daughter, Maria, at his side Saturday morning at Shenandoah Manor Nursing Center. He was a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Born in Shenandoah, March 25, 1934, he was a son of the late George and Elsie (Kowalchick) Rittle.

He was a 1952 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.

Mr. Rittle was a decorated Air Force veteran, having served his country proudly during the Korean War. During a four-year enlistment, he was a nuclear weapons mechanic specialist attached to the 35th Fighter Bomber Squadron while serving in Korea and Japan. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

George was a skilled and gifted carpenter, having worked in many homes in Shenandoah and surrounding areas. He was a proud member for 56 years of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, beginning with Local 709 of Shenandoah until his current membership in Local 431 of Lebanon. He served as the steward on construction in the building of many high-rises, prisons and power plants. He was a delegate to the Keystone District Council for over 30 years. Throughout his life, George also worked for various contractors and lumberyards, including the former Kal’s Lumber Co., O’Hearn Lumber Co., Kutskiel & Souchuck Lumber Co. and Swantek Lumber Co., all of Shenandoah. In his retirement, he served as the maintenance man for the former St. Stanislaus Church, Shenandoah.

On August 10, 1958, in the former St. Stanislaus Church, Shenandoah, he married the former Josephine Marie Karlesky, his “bride” who survives.

He was also a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, and a very active member of the former St. Stanislaus Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. For many years, George was instrumental in the success of the annual bazaar by constructing all of the food and game stands, as he called it, “his way into Heaven.” George was also a member of Shenandoah Archery Club.

To say family was of most importance to him is an understatement. George’s family meant everything to him and he took great delight in time they spent together. George was extremely proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s many accomplishments in life. Many memories were made on family vacations in Canada and on hunting and fishing trips with his sons and later with their families. Anytime the family was together was a special time, but holidays were particularly meaningful. His grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as “Dziadzi” brought a smile to his face and joy to his heart. Seeing and holding his great-grandson, Mason James, for the first time was a moment he never forgot. Everyone who knew George Rittle has more than a story to tell; he was a man with a great sense of humor and a quick comeback. In his retirement, George enjoyed his daily trips to Redner’s Market to shop and talk with his many friends.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his beloved daughter-in-law, Suzanne E. “Suzie” Rittle, on February 18, 2014.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of almost 61 years, Josephine Marie Rittle, are his daughter, Maria E. Rittle at home; two sons, George J. Rittle and his wife, Lynda, of Ringtown, and Joseph J. Rittle, of Pottsville; five grandchildren, Stephen Rittle and his wife, Erin, Hannah, Rebecca Lynn, John and Claudia Rittle; one great-grandson, Mason James Rittle; one brother, Edward Rittle and his wife, Ruthann, of Whitehall; one sister, Rosemarie Rittle and her husband, James Fronheiser, of Barto; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law, nieces; nephews and their families and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Casimir’s Church, 229 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, the sacred worship site of Divine Mercy Parish with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, as the celebrant and Monsignor William F. Glosser concelebrating. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A viewing will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to Divine Mercy Parish Memorial Fund or the Father Walter J. Ciszek Chapel Memorial Fund, both c/o 108 W. Cherry St., Shenandoah, PA 17976.

Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, Shenandoah is in charge of the arrangements.

Geisinger named to Governor’s Employer Honor Roll

Geisinger has been recognized for its commitment to developing and maintaining a diverse workforce with a place on the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Governor’s Employer Honor Roll.
Gov. Tom Wolf presented the award during the Pennsylvania Workforce Development Association’s annual conference earlier this month. Geisinger was nominated by the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corporation (CPWDC) and the Employment Advancement and Retention Network (EARN).

“Geisinger has long recognized the value of—and embraced—diversity and inclusion,” said Julene Campion, Geisinger’s vice president of human resources. “This includes understanding the social and economic conditions in our communities and how they affect our workforce.”

The award recognizes Geisinger’s ongoing collaboration with the EARN program, which assists low-income individuals who face serious barriers in gaining and maintaining employment. This partnership has resulted in the hiring of seven EARN participants in full-time positions within Geisinger as environmental services technicians, nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses. These positions offer comprehensive benefits and the ability to advance in long-term career pathways.

“Geisinger supports the communities it serves and, most importantly, the people who strengthen its workforce,” Campion said. “Geisinger believes that the EARN program is an essential partner in ensuring a diverse workforce that serves as our foundation for providing culturally competent care.”

Geisinger was also recognized for its efforts to understand and assist with the challenges faced by EARN participants in finding and maintaining employment, including reliable transportation. EARN staff and Geisinger human resources staff work together to identify available positions at Geisinger locations that help alleviate these barriers.

“Geisinger understands the challenges many employees face, like transportation and extensive waitlists for childcare, and have worked with our customers to find jobs near their homes with hours around their family needs,” said Erica Mulberger, executive director of CPWDC. “We are thrilled that Geisinger has been recognized statewide for its commitment to providing opportunities with family-sustaining wages and career growth opportunities.”

Big Diamond Speedway Results from Friday Night - 05/31/19

The 7th annual “Money in the Mountains” race at Big Diamond Speedway turned into an instant classic which will be talked about all season. With $10,000 on the line to the winner of the 50-lap race it was sure to bring out the best of the drivers’ capabilities.

When the dust settled, and the checkered flag flew it was Craig Von Dohren standing in victory lane for the second time in two weeks as he held off a determined Mike Gular for the win. Gular gave it all he could to muscle his way past Von Dohren but in the end came up a half of a car length short. Ryan Godown was also part of the mix finishing a very close third.

Gular brought the field down to the green flag and immediately jumped to the lead with Von Dohren close behind after starting third. Billy Pauch Jr was also in the mix early on from the fourth spot.

The first caution of the race came out on lap four when Justin Grim slowed to a stop. The first attempt to restart the race was halted for another yellow and on the subsequent restart, it was Von Dohren outpowering Gular into turn one to take the lead. Once Von Dohren gets the lead at Big Diamond it’s usually lights out for the competition, but the invader Gular had other intentions on this night. After opening a small lead, Gular started to gain on Von Dohren and by lap 15 was all over the leader. Working the low line between turns three and four Gular could pull alongside Von Dohren but CVD would power off the turn to stay in front.

Gular finally managed to wrestle the lead away from Von Dohren as they crossed the line completing lap 20. Gular’s attempt to lengthen his lead was slowed when the yellow came out on lap 21 when both Rick Laubach and Ryan Krachun both slowed.

On the restart, Von Dohren once again out powered Gular getting into turn one to retake back the lead. Multiple yellows ensued as the field approached the lap 30 fuel stop. Lap 29 saw rookie driver Alex Yankowski hit the front stretch wall hard bringing out the yellow and this is where the fuel stop was taken.

After the 10-minute break, it was back to racing with Von Dohren leading the way with Gular stalking him each and every lap. Ryan Godown was starting to make his presence felt now as he was applying the pressure to Gular for second.

The final yellow of the race came out on lap 35 when Ryan Watt slowed with a flat tire. The final fifteen laps of the race were scintillating as Von Dohren, Gular & Godown ran nose to tail every lap. Gular now had to fend off Godown for second while also trying to find a way around Von Dohren for the lead and it almost cost him as Gular went high to make a move around Von Dohren only to have Godown make a move underneath to steal away second but Gular was able to cross back over and motor past Godown to remain in the runner-up spot.

With five laps to go it was apparent that Gular had the faster car between himself and Von Dohren but the question remained if he could get by him. Gular worked hard each and every lap and with two to go was under Von Dohren to pull even with him only to have Von Dohren edge back in front as they took the white flag. Gular repeated what he had done a lap earlier on the last lap as he muscled his way under the leader coming through turns three and four and gave it all he had but Von Dohren wasn’t giving in and held tough as they came off of turn four side by side. With the large crowd on their feet cheering on the two combatants it was Von Dohren edging out Gular by a half a car length to take the crowd pleasing win along with the big money.

“I knew he (Gular) was there but I wasn’t sure how close he was,” as a happy Von Dohren talked afterwards. “I could see the flashes from the photographers, so I knew it was close. There was a fine line in turns three and four and a couple of times I missed it and he was able to get under, but we had enough to hold him off, I guess. Dick Biever gives us good cars and I am glad I was able to get him a win tonight.”

A disappointed Gular finished second. “This car was really good tonight. I did everything I could to get by him except race him dirty but that is not how I race. It’s disappointing to finish second but we’ll take and come back on Tuesday. The new track surface and the new lighting are great and I look forward making a return trip.”

Ryan Godown bounced back from a hard crash at Big Diamond last week to finish third with Jared Umbenhauer and Jeff Strunk rounding out the top five. A strong running Billy Van Pelt was sixth followed by Billy Pauch Jr, Brandon Grosso, Doug Manmiller and Brett Kressley completing the top ten.

In the 20-lap USS Achey Sportsman feature, it was the veteran Doug Hendricks making it two in a row as he dominated the action after taking the lead very early on from his sixth starting spot from Ryan Kunkle. The race was slowed by just one caution flag on lap 16 giving the field a chance at Hendricks but it was to no avail as Hendricks stayed in control for the remaining four laps as his competitors battle hard behind him for the top five. At the end it was Hendricks winning the race followed by Craig Whitmoyer Wayne Witmer, Ryan Kunkle and Tim Fitzpatrick.

The Eash’s Towing and Recovery Street Stocks put on show as Jason Geesaman and Jeff Haag both coming from the back after early race incidents dazzled the fans with Geesaman winning out the side by side battle for the win.  Haag was the early leader and looked to be in control until the caution came out on lap 10. Haag was then forced to pit to when a piece of his car had come loose. After making repairs Haag restarted at the back of the field and with only 10 laps remaining made a hard charge to the front to battle Geesaman who had took the lead on lap 14 after he spun earlier in the race. The two drivers raced hard for the last two laps of the race with Geesaman just edging out Haag for the win. Elvin Brennan III, Eric Tripp and Jim Somers were the top five.

Chris Holland was the winner of the Savage 61 Road Runner main event after taking the lead on lap six. Holland, Jim Kost, Terry Kramer, Matt Ney and Kris Ney waged a tremendous battle for the lead early on before Holland took control. Once in front there was no catching Holland as he went on to take the win over Matt Ney, Terry Kramer, Jim Kost and Kris Ney.

The Pizza Shop of Etters Central PA Legends put on quite a show for the fans as they went non-stop in their main event. Aaron Updegraff was the early leader with Scott Houdeshell taking command as the field was coming to the halfway flags. Jeremy Ott was on the move and pressuring Houdeshell for the lead as the laps wound down. Making a last-ditch effort on the last lap, Ott was able to pull alongside of Houdeshell as the duo raced for the win with Houdeshell hanging on to win by just a few feet. After the top two it was Mason Chaney, Travis Perry and Alex Schmiedel the top five finishers.

Don’t forgot on tap for this coming Tuesday June 4th, it will be the Short Track Super Series in action with the “Anthracite Assault” as the cars and stars from the North Series battle those from the South Series in the only combination race of the STSS. Last year there were over 50 modifieds in attendance for this event before the rains came to cancel the program. Along with the STSS modifieds will be the Crate 602 Sportsman North vs South battle.

Glider Lands in Field in Rush Township on Monday

The pilot of a glider had to make a landing in a field in Rush Township on Monday.

According to Rush Township Police Chief Kenneth Zipovsky, on Monday, June 3rd, 2019 around 4:15pm, a report was received that a small fixed wing aircraft had made an emergency landing in a field near the 200 block of Fairview Street in Rush Township. Police responded and located a glider piloted by Claudio Abreu, 74, of Great Meadows, New Jersey that had landed in the field.

Police learned the Abreu had taken off from an airport in New Jersey, and lost thermal lift in Schuylkill County and had to make a controlled landing in the field. There were no injuries as a result of this action.

The glider was retrieved by an associate of the pilot.

According to Dave Truskowsky, a local pilot from Mahanoy City, the issue the pilot had involving the "thermal lift" is common among gliders.

"This is something that happens from time to time in the glider world, especially when doing cross county trips with no engine. The thermals or unequal heating of the ground is the engine for gliders." said Truskowsky.

Hazleton Man Sentenced To 37 Months’ Imprisonment For Heroin Trafficking in Schuylkill County

$

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Tuesday that Franklin Gonzalez, age 23, who resided in Hazleton and is a citizen of the Dominican Republic, was sentenced yesterday to 37 months’ imprisonment by Senior U.S. District Court Judge James M. Munley, for participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy that distributed heroin in the Schuylkill County area between 2012 and May 2016.
According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, the defendant previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin, which is equivalent to more than 4,000 retail bags of heroin.

Judge Munley also ordered Gonzalez to serve four years on supervised release following his prison sentence. Gonzalez is also subject to being deported to the Dominican Republic.

The mater was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and local police in Schuylkill County. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

This case was also brought as part of a district wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic regarding the use and distribution of heroin. Led by the United States Attorney’s Office, the Heroin Initiative targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is part of a coordinated effort among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit heroin related offenses.

Five people were injured Tuesday in a crash in Hometown.

According to Rush Township Police Chief Kenneth Zipovsky, on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at approximately 11:43am, a report was received that a 2-vehicle collision occurred in Rush Township at the intersection of Mahanoy Avenue and Marian Avenue.

Police responded and discovered that one of the vehicles had been flipped over onto its roof as a result of the collision, and the male driver was entrapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters from the Hometown Fire Department were able to remove the male from the vehicle.

Evidence at the scene determined that a Jeep Liberty being operated by a 17 year-old male juvenile from Summit Hill pulled out from a stop intersection on Marian Avenue when it was unsafe to do so.

The Jeep Liberty then collided with a Nissan Murano operated by Maryann Grega of Weatherly. As a result of the collision, the Jeep flipped onto its roof.

There was extensive damage to both vehicles and both were towed from the scene.

The driver of Jeep Liberty and his 3 male juvenile passengers were all treated at the scene and transported to local medical facilities for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Grega was also treated at the scene by medical personnel and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The Rush Township Police was assisted at the scene by the Hometown Fire Company, the Hometown Fire Police, McAdoo Ambulance, Tamaqua Ambulance, and APTS Ambulance.

Rush Township Police are still investigating the crash.
