STATE POLICE: CDL Test Examiner Charged with Falsifying PennDOT Exam Reports

A Luzerne County man is in custody as the result of a year-and-a -half investigation that took place at the Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) in Nanticoke City, Luzerne County.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Michael Anthony Jordan, 51, of Larksville, Pennsylvania was charged with 25 counts of Violations Concerning Licenses, 25 counts of Causing or Risking a Catastrophe, one count of Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition, and 25 counts of Tampering with Public Records or Information.

The State Police in Wyoming were contacted in October 2017 by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to investigate Jordan, who was a PennDOT third-party commercial driver’s license (CDL) test examiner. The investigation included interviews with numerous CDL applicants who were tested by Jordan at the LCCC from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2017.

The investigation revealed that Jordan falsified PennDOT examination reports and failed to properly test individuals, resulting in CDL licenses being issued to dozens of drivers without the proper safety tests being conducted. Jordan received cash payments directly from the applicants, resulting in a loss of income for LCCC. Personnel at LCCC had no knowledge of the fraudulent testing and fully cooperated with the criminal investigation.

Jordan’s actions allowed 142 commercial vehicle operators to drive on public highways without proper qualifications, risking the safety of other drivers on the road. The identified operators have been re-tested at different locations to assess their abilities and certify them as qualified CDL operators, and 67 failed the re-test.

North Schuylkill Places Second in State PennDOT Innovations Challenge

This past week, students from North Schuylkill High School competed in the State PennDOT Innovations Challenge.

Mentored by Kelly Stone, team members included Drew Mashack and Tyler Wolfgang.

The team had previously won the regional PennDOT District 5 competition.

Since last fall, students have been working hard to solve this year’s challenge, which asked students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones.

“Every day, construction workers on Pennsylvania roadways face a dangerous threat in work zones,” said PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards. “Despite increased enforcement efforts, work zone signage and smartphone alerts, drivers continue to commit traffic violations in work zones, which can lead to crashes or tragically someone being killed. We challenged our next generation of leaders to become an active part of the solution by developing innovative ways to tackle this transportation issue.”

The winning regional team’s innovation was the Personalized Digital Sign, a system of electronic signs that can be utilized within a work zone to inform motorists of work zone hazards and humanized the workers along with displaying work zone safety messages.

Now in its second year, the PennDOT Innovations Challenge invites high school students in grades 9-12 to use their problem-solving, creative and strategic-thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore actual transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the very real possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation.

The Regional winners competed against each otherin Harrisburg, this past Wednesday for the state championship. The statewide winning team will be awarded $1,500 from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) to be divided among team members

North Schuylkill's team came in second place overall.

A special egg hunt was held on Saturday for children in Schuylkill County with special needs.

Last year, Dustin, a 7 year old boy with autism attended an egg hunt  in Schuylkill County with other children and due to his disability, was unable to get any eggs. He did not have adequate time and the noise of the horn scared him due to a sensory issue.

With the lack of events geared towards individuals with disabilities, Dustin’s mother, Amy Free, of Pottsville,  gathered some friends and sprung into action.  Together they organized "Dustin's Eggstavaganza Special Egg Hunt", which was held Saturday at the South Cass Township Fire Company just outside Minersville.

The event, was open to all Schuylkill County children 16 and under who suffer from a disability.  Over 100 children registered for the event.

There were 2 separate areas with the specific needs of the children in mind.  One area included eggs on top of cones and attached to balloons for wheelchair bound children and also special "beeping" eggs that were provided specially by the Pennsylvania State Police Bomb Squard.

Each child awas guaranteed to receive eggs and have an equal opportunity for larger prizes.

Other activities such as egg painting and other games were also available along with a bunch of characters which included the CACL Dinosaur, Elsa, Cinderella, Elmo, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, a minion, and the Aaron's Dog.

The Easter Bunny also attended and was escorted to the event on a Army M29 Weasel from World War II.

Bicycles were also raffled off to 3 lucky kids.

Sponsoring the event were McDonald’s Lunch from Girardville, Michels Hearing Center, Pennsylvania State Police, Wheel, Calvin Family, Dawn and Bill, Aaron’s, Skook House of Jerky, Berks Hot Dogs, Skook News, AMVETS Pottsville, South Cass Fire Company, Izspired, The Republican-Herald, PA Live (WBRE), BG’s Value Market, Gym-Jam, Copycat Business Systems Inc. and JBP Photographics and Art.
