Mayor Talks Respecting the Past, Embracing the Future in Pottsville

On Thursday evening, Pottsville Mayor, James T. Muldowney presented his annual State of the City Address.

The Annual Address was held at the Majestic Theater, located on North Centre Street, in Pottsville with roughly 200 people in attendance which including City dignitaries, past and present county officials, state officials, Congressman Dan Muesser, and others.

City Controller Bill Messaros opened the event and introduced the Minor Notes Chorale who sang the Star Spangled Banner.

Messaros also recognized the City's dignitaries in attendance, Councilman Mark Atkinson, Councilwoman Dottie Botto, Councilman Joe Devine, Councilman Ed Jones, City Treasurer Ellen Mika, City Controller Bill Messaros, City Solictor Tim Pellish, Police Chief Rick Wojciechowsky, Fire Chief Jim Misstishin, City Administrator Tom Palamar, and City Clerk Lisa Kral. 

Messaros also recognized and thanked the Legislators that advocated on behalf of the city and worked with them to improve.

Before the Mayor gave his address, the city continued a tradition they began in 2018, and recognized their "Partners in Progress"

The first to be recognized was the United States Department of Agriculture.

The USDA has assisted the city in financing the new Mahantongo Parking Garage and have shown interest in sharing their programs and services to assist the Police Department, and other community organization and municipalities in Schuylkill County. 
USDA Representative Tonya St. Clair accepted the award on their behalf.

The second to be recognized was the Lehigh Valley Health Network.

LVHN was recognized for continually investing in the city to bring state of the art care, employment opportunities, and healing to the community.  LVHN also donated ballistic helmets and tactical carry gear to the Pottsville Bureau of Police.

Hospital Representatives Ms. Mary Tirrell, Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Legislative Affair for LVHN and Mr. William Reppy, President of Lehigh Valley Hospital - Schuylkill accepted the award on their behalf.

Mayor James T. Muldowney was introduced to begin his address but began with a moment of silence to honor Pat Murphy.

Muldowney called Murphy, "A man who dedicated so much of his life to our community".

The theme for Muldowney's address was "Respect the Past, Embrace the Future".

"Pottsville has been the home of countless men and women who have served our country, our community, and others with selflessness and courage.  We are proud and grateful for their contributions." began Muldowney.

"Yes, our past is rich, but our future is even brighter", added Muldowney.

"We are in the midst of a historic redevelopment that has the potential to revitalize our City, incite economic and community development and awaken a great sense of community pride.  As we build from the past success and the lessons we have learned along the way, we are rediscovering the key to success."

Muldowney then recognized the City Departments that support the city.

The Accounts and Finance Department, led by Councilman Mark Atkinson, City Treasurer Ellen Micka, City Controller Bill Messaros, City Clerk Lisa Kral, were touted as individuals who view the City as a business.

"The Department has met and exceeded obligations by many vital tasks in an efficient manner.  Those tasks include the collection of all revenue, the payment of bills, working with auditors, meeting compliance requirements and ensuring that ordinances are properly updated.  All this while manag an $8.9 million budget.

Muldowney also noted that the 2019 budget was balanced on time.  He also noted that the City of Pottsville has not raised taxes since 2014.

Next, the Mayor recognized the Department of Streets and Improvements under the direction of Councilwoman Dottie Botto.  Superintendent Tom Whitaker and his dedicated staff were recognized for their continued attack on projects big and small and an efficient manner.

Muldowney reported that the City's internet-based pot hole reporting system, citizens concerns, and ongoing data compiled on road conditions has continued to make a positive impact on the city's streets.

Some stats included
  • More than 600 tons of blacktop were used to repair pot holes
  • 2,275 tons of blacktop were used to complete major paving projects an increase of 575 tons from the previous year
  • In 2018, the Street Department responded to 3,200 citizen requests which included water run-off issues, yard waste pickup and pot hole repairs.
  • In October, during the 2nd Annual Electronic Recycling Event, 11 tons of televisions, computers and other electronics were collected
Mayor Muldowney also talked about the work the department has done after the August 2018 Flooding and the cooperation with FEMA, PEMA, and Schuylkill County Emergency Management.

Next, the Mayor recognized the Department of Parks and Public Property led by Councilman Joe Devine.

Muldowney talked about the improvement projects to Yuengling Park as well as the first Christmas event held there.

He also talked about the projects at the Pat Flannery Basketball Court at Joulwan Park, the JFK Pool and Yuengling Bicentennial Park.

He also talked about the year's events including the Annual Christmas Party, Tree Lighting, New Year's Eve Celebration, Easter Egg Hunt, 3rd Brigade Band Concerts, holiday home and business decorating contests, 3rd Annual Fitness Challenge.

Muldowney also talked about 2019 with more events including the "Summer Concerts in the Ville", Summer Kick Off Concert, and August Jazz Music.

The Hometown Hero Banner Program will also continue through 2019.

The Department of Public Safety under the direction of Councilman Ed Jones was recognized next.

Muldowney recognized Fire Chief Jim Misstishin for his "fine job leading and advocating for the best volunteer fire department in the state of Pennsylvania".

Stats for 2018 for the 7 volunteer fire departments in Pottsville include
  • 1,005 total alarm calls, an increase of 505 from the previous year
  • 18 fires were investigated with the Police and State Police Fire Marshal
  • 1,200 students participated in fire prevention programs
Some notable events held were:
  • The Public Safety Night Out
  • First Annual "Pottsville's Bravest" Volunteer Family Night at the JFK Pool
  • "Sound the Alarm Save A Life Program" with the American Red Cross
Muldowney also noted their partnership with Boscov's for the Friends Helping Friends program that raised money for all 7 fire departments.

The 24 men and women who make up the Pottsville Police Department were recognized for their professionalism and dedication.

The department handled over 12,500 documented incidents in 2018.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Pottsville Police overall clearance rate for 2018 Uniform Crime Report matters continued to exceed 80%.

The officers also participated in over 1,000 hours of training to improve all aspects of police work.  Part of that training included a department wide active shooter training conducted by the FBI.

Through grants, the police department has received more than $125,000 in funding to defray costs for new vehicles, body worn cameras, salary, training, bullet proof vests, and traffic safety enforcement.

Patrol officers have also participated in 30 successful opioid overdose reversals in the field using Naloxone.

Muldowney noted that the City's overall number of crime offenses have dropped 8.5% in 2018.

Looking ahead, a newly formed Community Engagement Team will be established and utilize bike patrols for special events.

The Code and Health Department was also reported to continue to work diligently to protect property values, while improving the health, safety, and quality of life for the city.

Stats include:
  • Taxes and Municipal fees have brought in more than $190,000
  • The department has addressed 1,300 property maintenance complaints and concerns
  • 295 building inspections
  • issued 370 building permits, 42 zoning permits, 40 occupancy
  • 300 rental inspections
  • 23 demolitions
In closing, Muldowney said, "We must ensure that our City continues to be a place where individuals and families can thrive, children can learn, people can heal, and business can grow.  I ask for your support and help.  Our joint efforts will be the key to the future"

The event ended with "God Bless America" being sang by the Minor Notes Chorale.

Investigation Leads to Girardville Man Being Charged with Sale of Methamphetamine

A Girardville man is locked up in Schuylkill County Prison after an investigation into the sale of methamphetamine.


According to authorities, on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, David Lee Collazo was charged with one county of Delivery of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia for selling methamphetamine from his home.

On Tuesday at 6:00am, the Schuylkill County Drug Task Force executed a Federal Search Warrant at 18 East Mahanoy Avenue, Girardville as part of an ongoing investigation into the sale of methamphetamine.

During the search, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana were seized along with cash.

Collazo was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker on the above charges and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $25,000 straight cash bail.


Members of the Drug Task Force, along with State Police and Federal Agents had conducted an investigation into the sale of methamphetamine from the Collazo's home as part of an ongoing, collaborative effort to combat drug crimes through the FBI Safe Streets Program.

Shoulder Work Scheduled for Next Week on Interstate 81

PennDOT has announce road work on Interstate 81 that will occur on next week.


According to PennDOT, shoulder work/widening is scheduled to take place in Foster Township between Exit 119 (Highridge Park Road/Gordon Mountain) and Exit 107 (Route 209/Tremont/Tower City) as well as Ryan Township between Exit 124 (Frackville/Route 61) and Exit 131 (Route 54/ Mahanoy City).

The work is scheduled to begin Monday, March 18, 2019 and wrap up on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Restrictions will be place from 7:00am until 3:00pm.

Ashland Man Taken Into Custody on Parole Violation

On Friday morning, an Ashland man was taken into custody after being wanted on a parole violation.

Around 7:20am, Friday, March 15, 2019, Ashland Police along with State Parole Agents went to 332 Centre Street, in Ashland, to serve a warrant on John Magdeburg, 40.  Magdeburg was found sleeping in an apartment and was taken into custody and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison.

Beatrice G. Richards, 93, of Auburn, passed away Wednesday, March 13th, at Orwigsburg Center, Orwigsburg.

Born in Lebanon County, PA on November 6, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Robert & Dorothy (Wilson) Donton.

She was the widow of John H. Richards, who passed away in August, 2006, and her first husband, Andrew Sirko.

In addition to her parents and husband, Beatrice is also preceded in death by her son, Andrew Sirko, sister, Betty Paul, and brothers: Lyndon, Lyman, and Robert Donton.

She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Schuylkill Haven.

Beatrice is survived by three daughters: Dottie Hardock, fiance of Ed Folk, Auburn, Nancy Hepler, wife of Duane, Cressona, and Jayne Krammes, Sanford, NC. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Melissa, & Jason Hepler, Angela Yeich, & Dylan Ditzler, great-grandsons, Caleb, & Caden Hepler, and four siblings: Dorothy Begley, Christiana, PA, Ida Miller, Schuylkill Haven, Clarence Donton, Schuylkill Haven, & Warren Donton, Port Carbon, as well as step-children: Barbara Moyer, Nancy Smith, Monica Jacoby, Michele, Jack, & Stevens Richards, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. at Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home, Inc., Schuylkill Haven, on Tuesday, March 19th with Rev. William Parrish officiating.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Interment will follow the funeral service at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Beatrice's family requests donations in her memory to Covenant United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 209 East Main Street Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.

Ruth Reed Liddle, 93, formerly of Reedsville, Wayne Township, passed away Wednesday, March 13, at Orwigsburg Center.

Born in Summit Station, on Jan. 22, 1926, she was a daughter of the late George and Hannah Reed Wildermuth.

She was the widow of Samuel Liddle, who passed away in 1987, as well as her first husband, Henry Reed, who passed away in 1973.

She was a graduate of Cressona High School, Class of 1943.

She was a member of Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schuylkill Haven. Ruth was a former Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School coordinator for Bethany EC. She also served as a eucharistic minister.

Ruth was a member and past Matron of Order of the Eastern Star Cressona Chapter 367, the American Guild of Organists and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member and past president of the South Schuylkill Garden Club. She served as a Diakon volunteer as a Meals on Wheels driver. Ruth served on the Board of the Anthracite Concert Association. She was a past member of Legal Secretaries Association, and a past Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth and past Grand Organist of the Order of the Amaranth. She was past Grand Faith and past Grand Chaplain and Organist for two years.

Prior to retiring in 1987, she was employed by the District Attorney of Schuylkill County as a legal secretary for 18 years. She had also served as organist and choir director throughout Schuylkill and Berks counties for more than 70 years.

Ruth is survived by her children, Barry Reed, husband of Brenda, Denver, Gerald Reed, husband of Cindy, Winfield, and Deborah Heim, wife of Charles, Schuylkill Haven; grandchildren, Michael and Mark Reed, Matthew Reed, Lauren Dziadosz, Jamie Miller and Rebekah Noecker; 10 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Kaitlin, Kelsey, Kenzie, Elijah, Brayden, Lane, Orissa and Ellis; one great-great-granddaughter, Victoria.

A viewing for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., Schuylkill Haven. A Celebration of Life funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Schuylkill Haven, with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. An additional time for viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Jerusalem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 252 Dock St., Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972. Interment will be at Reedsville Cemetery, Wayne Township.

Fire Destroys Former Motel near Cressona

A fire Friday afternoon destroyed a former motel near Cressona.


At 4:00pm on Friday, fire crews were dispatched to a working fire at 1476 Route 61, the former Days Inn along Route 61 north of Cressona in North Manheim Township.

As the first crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the roof and it was quickly classified as fully involved.

The fire quickly spread through the entire structure causing multiple collapses.  Crews fought the fire defensively with multiple aerial units fighting the fire from above.

The building was left vacant after the motel closed a few years ago.

Around 5:45pm, the fire was marked under control.

Coronor Called to Motorcycle Crash in Mahanoy Township

One person was killed in a fatal motorcycle crash in Mahanoy Township.


Around 6:45pm, emergency personnel were called to 266 Brandonville Road, Mahanoy Township for a motorcycle accident.

According to Mahanoy Township Police, one person was killed in the crash but their identity is not released at the time of this posting.

A Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner was called to the scene.

As of 7:30pm, Route 339 (Brandonville Road) is closed.

Victim ID'd in Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Mahanoy Township

A Mahanoy City man died in a motorcycle crash on Friday in Mahanoy Township.

According to Mahanoy Township Police Chief Brandon Alexander, around 6:45pm, Jeremy Polizzi, 39, of Mahanoy City was headed northbound on Brandonville Road (Route 339) on his motorcycle in Mahanoy Township, north of Mahanoy City when he lost control and went head on into an oncoming vehicle headed south.

Alexander said Polizzi died on impact and was pronounced dead at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coronor David Truskowsky.

Polizzi was reported to not be wearing a helmet.

Route 339 was closed for several hours while the scene of the crash was investigated.

The driver of the other vehicle was not identified.

Fire Crews Responding to Fully Involved Barn Fire in Hegins

Fire crews are responding to a barn far in Hegins.


Just before 11:30pm, fire crews were dispatched to 980 East Mountain Road, Hegins for a fully involved barn fire.

A tanker task force was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Responding to the scene are fire departments from Hegins Township, Hubley Township, Frailey Township, Eldred Township, and Pine Grove.

Fire at Former Days Inn Ruled Arson

After an investigation by a Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, troopers have officially declared the fire a case of arson.


According to Pennsylania State Police Trooper David Beohm, the fire is being considered a criminal act of arson.

Beohm said the investigation showed that the fire started in multiple places within the building.

At 4:00pm on Friday, fire crews were dispatched to a working fire at 1476 Route 61, the former Days Inn along Route 61 north of Cressona in North Manheim Township.

As the first crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the roof and it was quickly classified as fully involved.

The fire quickly spread through the entire structure causing multiple collapses.  Crews fought the fire defensively with multiple aerial units fighting the fire from above.

Around 5:45pm, the fire was marked under control.

Damage is estimated at several hundred thousand dollars.  The building was unoccupied and no injuries were reported.

Mahanoy Area Girls to Play Bellwood in State Semi-Finals

The Mahanoy Area Girls Basketball team will play this Monday night, March 18th in the State Semi-Finals.


The Golden Bears will face Bellwood at Williamsport Area High School at 7:30pm after they defeated Old Forge 54-40 in the Quarter Finals.

Tickets from Monday's game will be on sale at the school on Monday.  Cost is $4 for students and $8 for adults and seniors.  All tickets at the door will be $8.

The winner of Monday night's game will head to the State Finals in Hershey at the Giant Center on Thursday, March 21st, 2019 at 12:00pm and will face the winner of Everett vs. West Middlesex.

Mahanoy City Police Respond to Burglary in Progress; Arrest One

Late Friday, Mahanoy City Police arrested one for burglary.

According to Mahanoy City Police, on Friday evening,  officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 300 block of East Pine St.

Two males were found inside the home with one being taken into custody and the second fleeing out a rear window.

Devon Adubato, 28, of Mahanoy City was identified as the suspect in custody and was arraigned by Magistrate Kilker and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on 25,000 straight cash bail.

The second suspect has not be identified.

Fire Companies Quickly Handle Rapidly Spreading Brush Fire In Lavelle

On Sunday afternoon, fire crews from Butler Township quickly put out a brush fire in Lavelle.


Around 2:15pm, Sunday afternoon, Butler Township fire companies from Lavelle and Fountain Springs were dispatched Lavelle Road in Lavelle for a brush fire.

Lavelle Fire was first on scene and found a rapidly spreading ground cover fire on Stemback Street.

Thanks to the quick work of the responding firefighters, crews ran 3 hose lines and had the fire out within 15 minutes.\\

Thomas P. “Odie” O’Donnell, 67, Schuylkill Haven, died Friday morning at his home with his wife Robin by his side.

Born February 11, 1952 in Pottsville, he was the son of the Francis and Margaret (Feinauer) O’Donnell.

He was a 1972 graduate of Nativity BVM High School, Pottsville and a 1976 graduate of Reading Area Community College.

Odie was an excellent story teller who lovingly had the “gift to gab”. He took great pride in his Top 500 1960’s playlist and loved sports especially March Madness. He could often be found hiking or walking his dogs Yogi, Lucy, or Cody or taking care of his cats.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Ann Gorman; brothers Michael and Joseph O’Donnell; and a sister in law Mary O’Donnell.

Odie is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Robin (Edmonds) O’Donnell, Schuylkill Haven; brothers Francis “Frank” O’Donnell, Pottsville and Daniel “Danny” O’Donnell and his wife Mary Ellen, Pottsville; sisters Suzie Gillespie and her husband William, Washington and Peggy Kaplan, Nevada; several nieces and nephews and his fur child Wendy.

Rodney N. Schnoke, 47, of Sweet Arrow Lake Rd., Pine Grove, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon after a long battle with debilitating pain and is now in eternal peace.

Born on March 5, 1972 in Pottsville, he was a son of Ernest Jr. and Linda Knapp Schnoke of Pine Grove.

He attended Pine Grove Area High School.

Rodney worked at Penn Dye and most recently Environmental Stoneworks.

He was a member of the Pine Grove Pigeon Club, Roedersville Gun Club, and loved hunting and fishing.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, and grandfather Ernest Schnoke, Sr. of Pine Grove, are his fiancee and long time companion of 20 years, Wendy Wolfe Griffith; son, Joshua Schnoke; step daughter Jayde Nagle, all of Pine Grove; two grandchildren, Iris Rayn and Skye Walker Littlejohn; sister, Lisa Krause of Pine Grove; nephew, Ryan and wife Chelsea Schnoke.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Manbeck's EC Church, 110 Wild Cherry Rd., Schuylkill Haven with Pastor Norman Dixon officiating. There will be a visitation on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the Church. Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove.

Catherine M. Schaeffer, 92, formerly of Pine Grove, passed away on Saturday, March 16, in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill East, Pottsville. 
 
Born on October 5, 1926, in Pottsville, she was a daughter of the late William and Marion Hammer Thompson .

Catherine was a graduate of Pottsville High School. She loved her family and enjoyed playing cards.
Preceding her in death were her first Husband, Cletus Searle; a Son, Richard Searle; a Granddaughter, Alicia Marie Gurski; and 9 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her husband, Claude J. "Firp" Schaeffer; two Daughters, Donna Searle-Rittle of Lebanon; Robin Gurski of Pine Grove; three Sons, David Searle, Mark Searle, both of Tremont; Glen Searle of Pine Grove; seven grandchildren Jay C. Searle, Justine Wagner, Heather Searle, Nichole Wolfe, Ryan Searle, Catherine J. Gurski, Kimberly White; 5 great grandchildren; two Sisters, Betty Ryndock and Ruth Livingston.

Funeral Services will be held at H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., on Thursday, March 21, at 2:00 pm with SALM John Ziegler officiating. There will be a viewing on Thursday, March 21, from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm at the H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc. Interment will follow in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove.

Rebecca M. Yorty, 91, of Pine Grove, passed from this life into eternal life on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Providence Place, Pottsville, while having the tender and loving care of family, staff caregivers and members of Compassus (Hospice).

Rebecca was born in Washington Twp, Pine Grove, on May 14, 1927, the eldest daughter of the late Charles and Marie Brown Kintzel.

She attended a one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and then made her way into Pine Grove High School, often walking the several miles. At 16, she began working at Fox Knapp Mfg, Pine Grove as a seamstress. She worked in the garment industry off and on for many years.

In 1946 she married Luther A. Yorty, her neighborhood sweetheart; and they enjoyed almost 55 years of marriage until his death in February 2001. Early in their marriage they both joined the Schuylkill Church of the Brethren and became very active members. Rebecca served by her husband's side as a church deacon for about 30 years, and she was a Primary Department Sunday School teacher for close to 40 years. She also taught Vacation Bible School classes many years, transporting a carload of neighborhood children.

In her retirement years, Rebecca became an avid quilter; and completed many large, intricate hand-stitched quilts, which her family treasures. She was a fastidious homemaker and took pleasure working in her flower beds.

Rebecca was a very loving, devoted, hands-on daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt.... She was so delighted to have her family with her.

In addition to her parents and husband, Rebecca was preceded in death by three brothers: Jeremiah, Thomas and Lawrence Kintzel, a sister Rhea Kutz, and five infant siblings.

Rebecca is survived by her only daughter, Nan, wife of Rev. Robert Hoenich; granddaughters Dr. Alethea, wife of Daryl Wessner, Gwendalin, wife of Benjamin Moyer and Janelle, wife of John Gruber; five great granddaughters: Sophia and Calista Wessner, Shea and Isla Moyer and Joanna Gruber. Also surviving are three sisters: Rose, widow of William F. Hoy, Mabel, wife of Edwin Motter and Grace, wife of Jay Fenninger, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at 5:00 P.M. at the Schuylkill Church of the Brethren, 347 Sweet Arrow Lake Rd., Pine Grove with Pastor Richard Hoffman officiating. All are respectfully invited to attend a visitation on Sunday, March 24, 2019 from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Church. Interment will be in the adjacent church cemetery at the convenience of the family.

James Withelder, 78, of Heckscherville, Cass Township, passed away on Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill – East. 

Born in Tremont, he was a son of the late Harry and Marie Minnichbach Withelder. He attended Tremont schools before working in the local anthracite mining industry. He was later employed by the Garden State Tannery, Fleetwood.

Jim collected antique bottles, and enjoyed trading and selling his finds among fellow collectors.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Judith Ann Withelder, Jean Withelder and Carol Withelder; two nephews, Harry and Paul Withelder; a niece, Anne Withelder.

Jim is survived by three children, James Withelder, Jr., Minersville, Judy Sullivan, Virginia, and Christine Withelder, Saint Clair; six grandchildren, David and Brittany Bush, Joshua and Jessica Withelder, Crystal and Lance Withelder; nine great grandchildren, Adalee Mae Withelder, Kieran and David Bush, Briannah Smith and Nevaeh Bush, Emily Fyffe, Kristen, Makayla and Ava Deans. He is also survived by a brother, Paul Withelder, Shoemakersville; two nephews, James and Jon Paul Withelder; a niece, Crystal Ochs.

Stanley A. Stefanski, 68, of Harrisburg, formerly of Shenandoah, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at his residence.

Born in Shenandoah on Jan. 13, 1951, he was a son of the late Stanley J. “Sonny” and Stella (Vernalis) Stefansky.

Stan was a 1968 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah, and a 1969 graduate of the Computer Educational Institute, Philadelphia, where he received a degree in data processing.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as a computer operations supervisor.

He was a former member of St. Casimir’s Church, Shenandoah.

Stan was an avid Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies and Penn State fan. He liked visiting the casinos. He especially enjoyed visiting with his family and being together with them at holidays and celebrations.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were two cousins, Richard Yarnitsky, who was like a brother to him, and Robert Siddall.

Surviving are his sister, Mary Ann Keretski, of Mount Carmel; three nieces, Karen Janolek and her husband, John, of Mount Carmel, Virginia Keretski and her fiance, Chuck Kreiser, of Mount Carmel, and Angela Ventilli and her husband, Tommy, of Mount Carmel; one nephew, Peter Keretski and his wife, Tammy, of Kulpmont; four cousins, Rita Karas and her husband, John, of Ringtown, David Hollenbach and his wife, Mona, of Teaneck, New Jersey, Valeria Sajone, of Shenandoah, and Eileen Fluharty, of Smithville, West Virginia; great-nieces, great-nephews and second cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2019, in St. Casimir’s Church, 229 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, the Sacred Worship Site of Divine Mercy Parish. Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Casimir’s Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A visitation will be held from 9 until 10 a.m. Friday morning in St. Casimir’s Church.

Who will be the next Junior Idol of Schuykill County?

Calling all youngsters from Ages 6-15! Do you have a talent for singing? You could become the 2019 Junior Idol of Schuylkill County!


This youth vocal competition is sponsored by the Schuylkill Theater Association and will be held at the Fairlane Village Mall.

The winner of the 2018 event was then 11 year old Aidan Grace who became the youngest Junior Idol winner.

This year’s event begins on Tuesday, April 2 at with the preliminary round at 6:00 p.m. and will continue the four Tuesday’s in April. Pre-registration is a must. Deadline to register is March 25, 2019.

On Tuesday, April 2, youngsters participating will sing a song of their choice from any genre of music. The song can not be any longer than 3 minutes.

Music must be instrumental only. Contestants can not sing along to words on a song. Also, no a Capella singing is permitted and no instrument accompanist by performer or with performer.

The top 10 performers from the preliminary round will be made public on the "Schuylkill Theater" facebook page the day following the preliminary round. Those 10 performers will then move onto the next round to be held the following Tuesday, April 9th

From there the top six will sing on April 16th. The top three will sing in the finals on April 23rd where the 2018 Junior Idol winner will be announced.

The winner will earn the honor of being the new Junior Idol. There will also be prizes presented.
