Schuylkill County Residents Give Opinions on Legalizing Recreational Marijuana

On Saturday, Pennsylvania Lt. Governor John Fetterman made a stop in Schuylkill County as part of his listening tour on legalizing recreational marijuana.

The stop was Fetterman's 13th stop on his 67 county tour where the Lt. Governor opens the floor to Pennsylvania residents to provide their opinions on why or why not the state should legalize marijuana recreationally.

When asked why the issue is so important to him, Fetterman said "New York and New Jersey are considering and it's important in Pennsylvania we have a conversation face to face on this really critical issue".

Almost 300 people attended the event at the Majestic Theater in Pottsville.

Dozens of those attendees lined up on each side of the room to provide their wide-range opinions.

"This is my responsible as an elected official, to come and engage and listen to what you think", said Fetterman.

Participating were leaders from local groups such as the Schuylkill United Way and Schuylkill County Drug and Alcohol who opposed the legalization of the drug.

Others included those have suffered injuries or have experienced family members that found that the use of marijuana was better than taking prescribed pills.

There were also many others who looked at legalization as a way for the State to make revenue by taxing the drug.

By the end of the event, Fetterman took a roll call vote and asked everyone to raise their hand if they for, against, or still in the middle of the road on the subject.

Estimating the vote, about 75% raised their hand "FOR" legalization, about 20% raised their hand "AGAINST", and about 5% were still not sure.

The Ashland Fire Department and the American Red Cross are going to team up to canvass the borough and install more smoke alarms.

On Saturday, March 23rd, 2019, volunteers from the Ashland Fire Department, American Red Cross, and organizations will be going door to door to install smoke alarms in homes.

After the fire that took place on Brock Street in the borough on February 21st, 2019,  that displaced 30 people, borough officials are using that as a wake up call to again make sure all homes have smoke alarms.

This campaign will focus on homes on Spruce Street, Pine Street, and Brock Street.  Starting at 10:00am, volunteers will go door to door, asking residents if they can install brand new smoke alarms wherever they are needed in the homes for free.

During previous campaigns, volunteers have installed nearly 300 smoke alarms in the borough.

Those who would like to preregister, and any other residents in the borough of Ashland that is interested in free smoke alarms, should contact the borough office at (570) 875-2411.
