Shenandoah Valley School District held their annual Veterans Day program Monday morning.

The program was held in the school's auditorium in front of the Junior and Senior classes.  Members of the American Legion Anthony P. Damato, Medal of Honor Post 792, Shenandoah, participated.

The program was opened by emcee Sean James and the ceremonial ringing of the chimes.

The Shenandoah Valley Band, under the direction of John Shoener, played the Star Spangled Banner before leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

An integral part of Shenandoah Valley's program is the acknowledgment of soldiers that are listed as Missing in Action.

Members of the honor guard approached the front of the auditorium where two candles were lit and an American Flag was presented.

"At this ceremony, we set a table and reserve a seat to acknowledge that presence of those brave men and women that are not physically present, but most certainly are here in spirit.  They will remain forever in our thoughts and prayers." said James.

Mayor Andrew Szczyglak welcomed the veterans, students, and teachers in attendance, but focused on the students.

"To the students that are here today, when the service is over today, walk up to the front row and shake the hands of the veterans here today.  Thank them for their service and dedication, and some of them who gave their lives to make our country great." said Szczyglak.

Commander of the Shenandoah American Legion, Bruce Popalis, provided the opening remarks.

A musical tribute was presented by the Shenandoah Valley Band that was dedicated to the men and women serving in the various branches of the armed forces.

Emily Demalis, a Shenandoah Valley student, introduced her uncle, the special speaker for the program, Joe Demalis.

Demalis is a 1992 Shenandoah Valley graduate who is currently serving as the Superintendent of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations at the Quantico Marine Corps Installation in Virginia, which serves as the Air Force's sole investigative and counter intelligence/counter terrorism threat-reporting integration mechanism.

Demalis' current rank is Chief Master Sergeant, which is the highest rank a non-commissioned office can achieve.  He has been deployed numerous times to nine locations in support of various Operations such as Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.

Demalis talked to the students about graduating from Shenandoah Valley and the educators that got him to where he is today.

He also talked to the students about the difference between Armed Forces Day, Veteran's Day, and Memorial Day and the importance of recognizing the Veterans in our area.

Commander Popalis conducted the requiem roll call of those Veterans that have passed since last Veterans Day.

Kahy Selbi, from the Shenandoah Valley Band, played "Taps".

Student council members Emily Demalis and Kaitlyn Hepler announced the launching of their "Helping Our Heroes" campaign.  The campaign will be collecting items to create care packages for soldiers.

Jacqueline Bubnis, accompanied by the Shenandoah Valley Band performed "Eternal Father".

The program concluded with a benediction by Veteran Neil Smith.

After the program, all the students walked to the front auditorium to thank the veterans for their service.

The veterans that were in attendance were:

 - Jim McGuire

A truck driver was injured in a crash in Frailey Township on Interstate 81 Tuesday morning.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred around 10:15am when Gary Shaver, 49, of Albemarle, NC was travelling north on Interstate 81 in a Kenworth Tractor Trailer in the area of Milemarker 110.5.

A work zone had the left lane closed in the area crash and Victor Ceban, 27, of Orlando, FL in a Freightliner Tractor Trailer was stopped in the right lane for traffic that was stopped in front of him.

Police say Shaver did not see that traffic was stopped and ran into the rear of Ceban.  Shaver came to a rest on the right shoulder and Ceban was pushed forward and came to a rest.

Shaver was trapped in the cab of his truck for almost an hour due to being heavily entrapped.  He was later transported to the Hershey Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Ceban was not injured in the crash.

Assisting State Police at the scene were the Minersville Fire and EMS, Donaldson Fire Company, Tremont Fire Company, and PennDOT.

Interstate 81 Northbound was closed for almost 2 hours while the scene was cleared.

Schuylkill County Volunteer Fire Companies to Receive Funding through Auditor General

On Tuesday, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale announced that he has released $55.1 million to help volunteer firefighters’ relief associations provide training and equipment that saves lives and protects communities across the state.
“This money is vital in helping volunteer firefighters who save lives and protect property,” DePasquale said. “These funds will benefit communities statewide by helping to purchase life-saving equipment, fund critical training and provide insurance for thousands of volunteer firefighters and emergency service providers.”

As part of the 2018 allocation, 2,518 municipalities across the state received $55.1 million in fire relief association funding for distribution to the volunteer firefighters’ relief associations providing fire services to their communities.

Schuylkill County is set to receive $659,286,70. Specific amounts per borough are listed below.

The volunteer firefighters’ relief association funding comes from a 2 percent state tax on fire insurance premiums purchased by Pennsylvania residents from out-of-state casualty insurance companies.

The Department of the Auditor General audits volunteer firefighters’ relief associations.

DePasquale said for the first time ever, all municipalities submitted their requests for VFRA funding on time.

“My office has been working to streamline the process for municipalities and that effort is paying off by making it easier for them submit requests for the funding they need to support volunteer firefighters.”

Snow and Wintry Mix on the Way for Schuylkill County on Thursday

Schuylkill County's first snowfall of the season is expected to fall Thursday with some wintry mix as well.

According to the National Weather Service, Schuylkill County is expected to receive anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow and possibly up to a tenth of an inch of ice from sleet and a wintry mix that could fall late with the storm.

The next big question is timing.

The snowfall portion of the storm looks like an day event with snow beginning late morning around 10-11am.

Snow will continue through the afternoon hours until the afternoon rush hour in the 4-6 timeframe when the snow will change to a wintry mix when temperatures warm up closer to the freezing mark.

Overnight the wintry mix will change to all rain as temperatures go above freezing, with a chance for more snow showers around daybreak.

Mahanoy City Borough Council Responds to Garbage Complaints

$

During Mahanoy City's meeting on Tuesday evening, the borough council responded to complaints about the new sanitation service in the borough.

Earlier this year, the Mahanoy City Borough Council accepted a bid to use County Waste for the borough's sanitation as of November 1st, 2018.

Since the new program took over two weeks ago, numerous borough residents have complained about the new system.

Many of the complaints pertain to the "garbage can" system that County Waste is making mandatory for the Mahanoy City customers.  Those complaints have been about the size of the cans, moving the cans, the weight, and the look of them.  Also, the payment system for County Waste is that resident's pay for the coming month.  When borough residents didn't pay their bill prior to the November start, County Waste left the garbage on the curb.

Tuesday's borough meeting was standing room only with most of the residents in attendance there to at least hear what the borough had to say.

Borough Council President Thom Maziekas opened the meeting.

"We know we've got a garbage problem, we know how the streets look, but we've got to give it a chance.  It's something new for all of us." said Maziekas.

"Give it a little time, a month, two months, something like that.  We will be in contact with County Waste, and those with delinquencies, we will go after them.  We will cite them for littering and cite them for quality of life.  On Friday, 50 or 60 tickets, have been given out already" added Maziekas.

Residents that attended expressed concern about garbage cans and where to keep them.  The council responded by telling them to "keep them on the sidewalk". "7 days a week, 365 days a year, keep them on the sidewalk.  Maybe it will work, maybe it won't, maybe County Waste will realize the cans do not work in Mahanoy City.  We just have to give it a chance." responded Maziekas.

The question was also asked if County Waste is aware of the complaints, Maziekas responded "We have let them know every complaint.".

A concern was also brought about people putting garbage in other people's containers.  "If you see that happen, report it the police." said Cpl. Charles Kovalewski.

Finally, Maziekas again said, "Give it some time, we are only two weeks into this.  Maybe it will work, maybe it won't.  In the end, it will work out.".

More information from Tuesday's meeting will be posted later.
