Senator Argall was recently named a Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB.)

The NFIB is the state’s leading small-business association and recognized several members of the General Assembly who achieved a 100 percent voting record on key small business issues in the current legislative session.

In response to receiving this award, Senator Argall stated “I am honored to once again be named a Guardian of Small Business. As public officials, we have an obligation to create a job-friendly environment here in the Commonwealth. Small businesses are responsible for employing half of the workers in the United States and by building up our many local small businesses, we can encourage more economic and population growth across Berks and Schuylkill counties”.

A 100 percent score indicates that Senator Argall voted in favor of small businesses and independently-owned companies every time an important vote was taken during the 2017-2018 legislative session. The Guardian of Small Business Award is the most prestigious honor that the NFIB bestows on legislators.

St. Luke's Miners Awarded $200,000 Grant to Fight Rural Opioid Crisis

St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Miners Campus has been awarded $200,000 by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to create a Rural Communities Opioid Response Plan.

St. Luke’s Department of Community Health & Preventive Medicine will lead a consortium of school districts and other community organizations in the development of the plan, which will address gaps in prevention, treatment and training for opioid abuse in the Coaldale area, a federally designated medically underserved rural area, and in the surrounding region, which has been severely affected by the opioid crisis.

“Stigma, transportation and cost of treatment prevent many people from accessing treatment and working toward recovery,” said Gregory Dobash, MD, of St. Luke's Ashland Family Practice, who is the site director of the Rural Training Track of St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency Program. “Proper planning can help our community overcome these obstacles and curb the swelling rate of opioid use disorder.”

St. Luke’s involvement in this project is part of its Community Health & Preventive Medicine program’s broader mission to increase health awareness, encourage appropriate access to health services and improve the health status of the community.

Among St. Luke’s Miners Campus’s partners on the project are the Panther Valley and Tamaqua Area school districts; Child Development, Inc. (Tamaqua Head Start program); PathStone Corporation (Coaldale Head Start program), and Schuylkill County’s VISION.

PPL Electric Utilities Rebuilding Schuylkill and Carbon Line for Stronger Service

A transmission line rebuilding project in Carbon and Schuylkill counties is strengthening service for local PPL Electric Utilities customers, as well as all those in a broader area served by the high-voltage electric grid.

The utility is rebuilding almost seven miles of 69-kilovolt transmission line in Rush Township and Nesquehoning borough from single- to double-circuit. This means the line structures will now carry two individual lines, rather than one.

The project is replacing aging equipment, which strengthens reliability. Adding the second circuit also increases reliability and allows more control for system operators.

The rebuilding of the line began Feb. 28 and is expected to wrap up at the end of November. Reconstruction work to restore the area under the line will likely continue into the spring of 2019.

“This work is part of PPL Electric Utilities’ ongoing investment in its delivery network,” Regional Affairs Director Carol Obando-Derstine said. “To better serve our customers, we’re replacing aging equipment, installing innovative technology like smart grid, adding strength and flexibility to our network, and making it more resilient against storms and potential cyber or physical attack.”
