    Knoebels is Home to the #1 Wooden Roller Coaster, the “Best Carousel” and the “Best Food” in the World

    The No. 1 Wooden Roller Coaster, the Best Carousel and the Best Food in the world can all be experienced at one amusement park. Knoebels Amusement Resort is home to these three distinctions, and a host of other “best-ofs” in the amusement industry.

    During an event on Saturday aboard the Showboat Branson Belle in Branson, Missouri, Amusement Today announced the 2018 Golden Ticket Award winners. The awards are calculated from an international poll. The survey is sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans around the world asking them to rate the “Best of the Best” in 23 categories.

    “It is encouraging to see a family-owned business make such an impact on the amusement industry,” said Tim Baldwin, Golden Ticket Awards Communications Coordinator, Amusement Today. “Even against global competition, Knoebels was a finalist in eight categories. No other park topped that. Plus the fact they took home three Golden Ticket Awards — that’s amazing! It’s very indicative of the commitment and passion the people behind this park have.”

    For the first time ever, Knoebels’ Phoenix was named the #1 Wooden Roller Coaster in the world. A number of factors make this quite momentous. Phoenix originally opened in 1948 as the Rocket at Playland Park in San Antonio, Texas. At that time, it was touted as the largest wooden coaster in the world. However, when the park closed in 1980, it was in danger of never thrilling guests again. Then, the idea came about to disassemble, move, and reassemble the coaster in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. This raised some eyebrows, but it happened.

    “In the mid 1980s, Knoebels needed Rocket just as badly as Rocket needed a new home,” said Richard “Dick” Knoebel, Knoebels’ President. “We looked on with excitement as Rocket began to rise as Phoenix, still not fully realizing what this coaster would mean to us and generations of park guests.”

    Phoenix opened to the public on June 15, 1985, and has been a guest favorite ever since. The name, “Phoenix,” is ever so fitting, considering the ride was reborn like the mythical bird that rose from its ashes. The coaster’s appearance may be unassuming, but its design by Herbert Paul Schmeck has withstood the test of time.

    “Phoenix is one of only two wooden coasters that have made the Top Ten list for all 21 years. That’s an incredible accomplishment,” said Baldwin. “To see it finally rate as the No. 1 coaster this year has been astounding. The park maintains — and loves! — that coaster. It is the quintessential wooden coaster experience.”

    Knoebel noted that though Phoenix isn’t the tallest, fastest or longest roller coaster, a number of factors set it apart.

    “The timeless design seems to bring joy to riders without fail, some of whom enjoyed the coaster as a kid, and now enjoy it with their own children. Our team members meticulously maintain Phoenix to ensure it operates just as it did the day it opened,” said Knoebel. “We're ecstatic knowing riders love Phoenix every bit as much as we do. Phoenix has finally risen to the top, and we couldn’t be more thrilled."

    Knoebels also received the Golden Ticket Award for “Best Carousel.” The 105-year-old Grand Carousel was purchased by the park in 1941, and has received the top award every year since its inception.

    “We take great pride that the Grand Carousel is the heart of Knoebels – A ride for all to enjoy and a place for the whole family to come together for a happy memory,” said Knoebels’ Vice President, Leanna Knoebel Muscato. “Our Grand Carousel is steeped in tradition and has a rich history of bringing people together, whether it’s by parents teaching their kids how to catch rings, by grandparents singing along to classic organ music as they bounce a toddler in a chariot, or through the incredible team who works tirelessly to care for and maintain the carousel’s timeless beauty.”

    The third 2018 Golden Ticket awarded to Knoebels was for its food. The award for best food has been captured by Knoebels 16 times in 19 years.

    According to Knoebels’ Public Relations Director, Stacy Ososkie, there are more than 30 food locations at Knoebels, and no two are identical. “Our food managers do an excellent job of balancing longtime guest favorites, and adding new items each year, all while ensuring it’s affordable,” said Ososkie. “Some visitors dedicate part of their visit to ‘eating their way around the park.’ A group this year made it their goal to find menu items around the park that span from “A” to “Z.”

    In addition to the first place awards, Knoebels was a finalist in other categories:

    * #3 Best Park

    * #3 Best Halloween Event

    * #3 Best Dark Ride for its Haunted Mansion

    * #4 Friendliest Park

    * #5 Best Indoor Roller Coaster for its Black Diamond

    * #34 and #50 in Top 50 Wooden Roller Coasters for Flying Turns and Twister, respectively

    “On behalf of Sen. Dave Argall, Reps. Jerry Knowles in recognizing and supporting the intended purpose of this important building and to those it is dedicated to serving —our region’s veterans.”

    The American Red Cross is working around the clock in the Mid-Atlantic ahead of the expected landfall of Category 4 Hurricane Florence. The extremely dangerous storm is on track to strike the coast of the Carolinas on Thursday.

    Teams of Red Cross disaster workers will be leaving Eastern Pennsylvania over the next couple of days to travel to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. These disaster workers will be helping to stage relief supplies and equipment ahead of the storm. They will also staff evacuation shelters that will be opening as the storm approaches.

    The American Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania Region is also planning to send at least two of its Emergency Response Vehicles south towards the area. Trucks stationed in both Stroudsburg and Wilkes-Barre and are scheduled to leave this week, driven by local Red Cross volunteers. In addition, Monday afternoon a truckload of American Red Cross shelter cots was moved to Baltimore, to be staged closer to areas that look to be significantly impacted by Florence.

    These local volunteers will join hundreds of Red Cross volunteers from all over the country on the ground, working to provide safe shelter and comfort to people who could be impacted by this potentially devastating storm. The Red Cross expects to be sending additional workers and resources as needed into the hardest hit areas over the weekend and in the weeks ahead.

    “The Eastern Pennsylvania Region of the American Red Cross has dozens of volunteers who are on their way to help. We’re thankful for the dedication of volunteers who are willing to help those in need,” said Dave Skutnik, Director of Communications. “Our local volunteers help on large disasters like Hurricane Florence, but also when smaller disasters like the recent flooding happen in our community.”

    While the storm does not look to directly impact Pennsylvania at this time, the Red Cross is continuing to monitor the storm’s progress locally. The Red Cross is leaving additional supplies and resources in the local area to ensure it is ready in case the storm track shifts and affects Eastern Pennsylvania.

    September is National Preparedness Month and the Red Cross urges everyone to follow these three steps: 1) build a disaster kit; 2) make an emergency plan; and 3) be informed about how local authorities will notify you, whether through local media or the Red Cross Emergency app, which can be found at redcross.org/apps.

    The Red Cross works 24/7/365 to be ready to respond to disaster such as hurricanes. You can help by donating now at redcross.org/, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

    Cardinal Brennan's Blessed Virgin Mary Statue Returns to Ashland

    A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that stood for years on the grounds of the former Cardinal Brennan High School returned to Ashland last month.

    When Cardinal Brennan High School closed its doors in June 2007, at the end of the 2006-2007 school year, the Allentown Diocese removed many of the school's items to preserve them. The Blessed Virgin Mary Statue was one of the most notable artifacts that was relocated.

    The Immaculate Heart Academy in Ashland, Pennsylvania was founded in 1927 and later became a co-ed school in 1952. In 1968, it was renamed Cardinal Brennan High School after it merged with Shenandoah Catholic High School. From 1927 to 2007, the Blessed Virgin Mary Statue stood at the entrance of the school’s property.

    Several months ago, the Allentown Diocese reached out St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Ashland and asked if they were interested in taking care of the statue.

    On August 17th, 2018, the statue was moved back to Ashland and it now stands on the steps of the former Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) convent next to the St. Charles Borromeo Parish Center in the 1100 block of Walnut Street.

    Many in the area are happy to see the statue return to the area, including Cardinal Brennan alumni.

    Jill Bensinger, a 1995 Cardinal Brennan graduate said, “High school is one of the biggest parts of your life, with the biggest impact on your memories. Every time you entered the gates of Cardinal Brennan the Blessed Mother welcomed you.”

    Bensinger added, “I’m thankful that She remained in our county, where we could visit that piece of our hearts.”

    Bryan Smolock, a 1999 Cardinal Brennan graduate stated, “it’s good to see something positive happen, and this is an amazing tribute to a school that shouldn’t be forgotten.”

    If anyone is interested in contributing toward the expenses accrued by bringing the statue home and a planned paint restoration, please contact the Parish Office at (570) 875-1521. In addition, contributions can also be given through weekend collection baskets, or be dropped off at the Parish Office located at 1115 Walnut Street, Ashland.

    An announcement had been made within the church that a dedication would take place October 6th, 2018, but due to the recent weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances, an official dedication will take place in the Spring of 2019.
