Nationally Recognized Pollinator Garden at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds

$

Congratulations goes out to the members Blue Mt. 4-H Livestock Club, under the direction of Jill Felty and Kim Morgan, for being awarded first place nationally for the Pollinator Garden that they planted at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds.

The garden was recognized as a first place recipient by The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. The pollinator garden then went on to be recognized as a first place winner at the National level as a pollinator garden by the National Federation of Garden Clubs.

The garden has gone under an expansion for 2018. Gardens have been added to the north and south side of the Horticulture building to provide a wraparound effect more befitting to the landscape of the building. The pollinator garden can be seen this year in the three phases of its development. A mature garden, which was established a number of years ago under the direction of June Leiby along with the pollinator garden put in last year. The gardens phase three is the newly establish growth put in this last spring. There could be a fourth phase in that part of the garden where it was disturbed over the winter so the Fair could put in a new waterline. The garden was repaired but then the rain came and flooded the grounds. Where the root system of plants were not established, the garden lost valuable top soil. That area has been partially reestablished

. So the garden as all gardens are a work in progress.

The Blue Mt. 4-H Livestock Club built a pollinator garden at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds. On the west side of the Horticulture Building a 60 by 10 foot garden was developed with many native plants, trees and shrubs. The garden was developed to provide a nurturing environment for native pollinators. The pollinator garden was cultivated, enriched and planted by club members under the direction of members of the South Schuylkill Garden Club. The South Schuylkill Garden Club supplied many of the plants found within the garden. Funding for the garden were provided through grants from many sources with a significant contribution made from the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation who is celebrating their 50th year of service to the community last year.

So why would a 4-H livestock club develop a pollinator garden you ask? The 4-H’ers understand the need for pollinators to assist in the supply for the food we all enjoy. The members of the livestock club understand that alfalfa which is a legume that almost all of their animals need to eat as part of a healthy diet. Alfalfa would not exist without pollinators. The need for pollinators is so great in other parts of the country that Bee Colonies are moved across the country from field to field to pollinate alfalfa. Enhancing an environment for natural pollinators in our area just makes sense. It is a hope that after seeing the garden that people go home and develop gardens in their own yards big or small that promote natural pollinators.

Inspirations for the Pollinator Garden came from the late June Leiby. June loved flowers. She shared her love for flowers with others. She was the driving force behind the Lewistown Valley Garden Club. The club members of the Lewistown Valley have been exhibiting floral exhibits at the Fair for many, many years. June’s passing in 2016 left a void in the garden club community. It is with a sad heart that a tree will be dedicated in her honor. The tree is a fountain Beech. Unfortunately the tree did not survive the winter and a new one will be reestablished again this fall.

The Blue Mt. 4-H Livestock Club is grateful to the South Schuylkill Garden Club for the direction and plants. The club would also like to thank the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation for the financial commitment that made this project possible. Also, thank you to Pine Creek Country

Garden Center for landscaping materials and advice. Of course none of this would not have happened if Jane Kruse of the South Schuylkill Garden Club and Kim Morg

Danny's Drive-In Reopens Under New Ownership

On Saturday, Danny's Drive-In, Ashland, held a Grand Re-opening under new ownership.

Danny's Drive-In has been a staple in Ashland for over 50 years, being known for their burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, and their famous hot sauce.

The restaurant opened in the 1950's, and was owned by Danny Snyder, then called the Boulevard Drive-In.  Fast forward to 1989, Danny retired and sold the business to his son Randy.

Earlier in 2018, Randy Snyder put the business up for sale and recently the sale was finalized.

On Saturday, the new owners, Mike and Sandy Kitsock, held a grand re-opening and car show.  The event had over 40 antique and classic cars fill the parking lot, just like it did on Friday nights, 40 years ago.

After the car show, we sat down with Sandy Kitsock and her daughter, Lindsey, who will be helping run the restaurant.

When asked about their interest in buying the restaurant, the Kitsocks had a very simple reason. "My dad has always loved coming here after football games and on weekends.  We want to take the restaurant back to where it used to be.  The place where everyone hung out." said Lindsey Kitsock.

For now the Kitsocks plan to run the restaurant exactly how it has been for the past few years.

"The staff, the food, the hot sauce will all stay the same." said Sandy Kitsock.

For the future though, the Kitsocks, are looking to change the hours and add some items to the menu, such as wraps and salads, they also want to bring back customer favorite, soft ice cream.

Currently the restaurant does not offer breakfast and is closed on Sundays. Lindsey Kitsock added "We want to do breakfast and open on Sundays, we just have to make sure we have the staff to do so first."

Danny's is located at 630 South Hoffman Boulevard, Ashland and is open daily at 11:00 am Monday through Saturday.

Having lived a brilliant and honorable life, Mr. Thomas J. Mozloom, 99, of St. Clair, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 28, 2018.

Born in Pottsville on February 9, 1919, “Tommy” was the son of the late John and Teresa (Ferris) Mozloom. He graduated St. Clair High School at the age of 16. As a member of the Greatest Generation and a proud veteran of the United States Army, Tommy served his country honorably during World War II from 1941 through 1946 as a Staff Sargent stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the Philippines. He was responsible for the repair and maintenance of heavy guns and equipment. Sgt. Mozloom received special commendations from the Army and President Truman for going above and beyond his duty by heroically risking his life and saving the lives of his company by removing a live shell from a damaged howitzer while under fire by the enemy.

After the War, Tom worked in construction and as a Cement Finisher and member of the Cement Masons Local 592 in Philadelphia retiring after a lifetime of dedicated service. He took pride in the home he provided for his entire family patiently restoring it from a storefront and pool hall into a beautiful home; the doors were always open to anyone who needed food, shelter, a listening ear, or wonderful advice. Tommy always had time for everyone: relatives, friends, and strangers. His lifetime kindness and quiet generosity often meant food, clothing, and shelter for so many people of all walks of life.

An intense faith and spiritual connection with God guided Tommy’s journey. He was a devote member of St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church (formerly known as St. Mary’s) for his entire life. Hailing from humble beginnings, Tom was a simple man who lived a simple life. He was a compassionate man, of gentle heart, and generous to others. He had an unconditional love for his family, caring for his parents until their passing and his sister Norma to this day. He was a man of honor and integrity with a dry sense of humor who loved Arabic music and cigars. He had a beautiful voice; he could sing anything in from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, with particularly Bing Crosby or Perry Como! He enjoyed watching old movies and musicals, and going to Atlantic City with his friends every Wednesday. He went out for coffee with his friends every night until they each predeceased him. He was also a Member of the Knights of Columbus.

Tom is survived by his sister Norma Mozloom with whom he resided; his sister Marie Barber of Sewell, NJ; his sister Janet Massoud of Utica, NY; and his brother John “Jack” Mozloom of Hamilton, NJ. He also leaves behind Nieces and Nephews; great Nieces and Nephews, and Great-Great Nieces and Nephews who have all been fortunate to know the kindness and love of “Uncle Tommy”. We will miss the sparkle in his smile.

He was predeceased by brothers Vincent and Francis Mozloom; his sisters Anna Joseph and Gloria DeMarkis; Mary Magdalene Mozloom and Madeleine Mozloom; a niece and three great-nephews.

3D Downloadable Guns Blocked in Pennsylvania

A new way to download and print a useable gun with a 3D Printer has been blocked in Pennsylvania.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Governor Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania State Police announced late Monday that they have successfully blocked access to 3D downloadable guns in Pennsylvania.

Following an emergency hearing in federal court in Philadelphia initiated by the Attorney General, a company seeking to distribute downloadable gun files over the Internet agreed to make its sites unaccessible to Pennsylvania users, and to not upload any new 3D gun files.

Before today’s hearing, the company, Defense Distributed, had promised that on August 1, “the age of the downloadable gun formally begins.” Today, the defendants claimed in court that they began distributing gun files even earlier – on Friday. By Sunday, 1,000 people had already downloaded 3D plans for AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifles.

The public safety controversy erupted after Defense Distributed recently settled with the federal government following a lengthy litigation, allowing it to continue its ‘at home’ gun-printing business. Left unchecked, Americans would be able to download a wide range of actual, working guns, including AR-15s, and 3D print their own guns – without serial numbers and without being subjected to the background check system for gun sales currently in place under federal and state law through licensed firearms dealers.

Attorney General Shapiro, Gov. Wolf and the State Police sued today in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, to block the company from distributing its 3D gun designs in Pennsylvania. This evening, the company agreed to block Pennsylvania users from its site, following an emergency hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Paul Diamond.

“The harm to Pennsylvanians would have been immediate and irreversible,” Attorney General Shapiro said. “Defense Distributed was promising to distribute guns in Pennsylvania in reckless disregard of the state laws that apply to gun sales and purchases in our Commonwealth. Once these untraceable guns are on our streets and in our schools, we can never get them back. The decision tonight to block Pennsylvania users from downloading these 3D gun files is a victory for public safety and common sense. The company also agreed to not upload any new gun files to its sites – another important development.”

“The threat of untraceable guns in the hands of unknown owners is too daunting to stand by and not take action,” Governor Wolf said. “Attorney General Shapiro and I will fight to protect Pennsylvania families and children. The federal government has abdicated its responsibility to keep our citizens safe but we will not be deterred from working to ensure Pennsylvania safety laws are followed and our residents are protected from these dangerous weapons getting in the wrong hands.”

According to the lawsuit, anyone can become a member of Defense Distributed for a nominal fee. When you sign up, you are only required to pick a username, password and supply an email – you are not asked for proof of age, a valid gun license or a permit-to-carry number. The company promises that by joining, members “do more than protect the Second Amendment. They fund its direct, material expansion”, according to the lawsuit.

Over decades, Pennsylvania lawmakers have created legal controls to ensure citizens can safely exercise all of the rights to which they are entitled: the right to bear arms and the right to live peacefully. The lawsuit states that “among these controls are criminal laws, including the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms Act. This long-settled statute requires protections in order to possess potentially-deadly weapons such a minimum age for purchase, background checks, and valid firearms licenses and permits.”

The lawsuit states that “Defense Distributed has sought to bypass these established legal requirements to instantaneously deliver real, operational firearms to any Pennsylvanian with an internet connection and a 3D printer.”

The Commonwealth’s lawsuit alleges violations of the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms Act of 1995 and the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968, as well as Pennsylvania’s Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law. The Commonwealth applied for a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunction to prevent Defense Distributed from making any 3D printable firearms available over the Internet.

Attorney General Shapiro and his legal team, working in concert with the Governor and State Police, will continue seeking a preliminary and permanent injunction against Defense Distributed’s plans to make its 3D gun files available online as the litigation continues.

Spraying to control the high populations of mosquitoes will take place this week in Schuylkill County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) and Schuylkill County Mosquito-Borne Disease Programs will conduct a mosquito control operation to reduce high populations of mosquitoes on Thursday, August 2, 2018, in portions of Cressona and Schuylkill Haven Boroughs.

According to DEP's web site, Schuylkill County is marked as "High Risk" and is consider a Hot Zone for the West Nile Virus.

Since the beginning of July, 19 Mosquitos have tested positive for the virus across the municipalities of Schuylkill Haven, Cressona, Pottsville, Hegins Township, Ringtown, and West Mahanoy Township.

Truck mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spray equipment will be utilized to spray Duet applied at a rate of .75 oz/acre. This product is designed to provide quick knockdown and effective control of adult mosquitoes. The control work will begin late in the evening.

Weather conditions and other unexpected events (such as lowered mosquito populations) could delay or cancel this spray operation. The rain date for this application is Monday, August 6, 2018.

Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

Individuals can take a number of precautionary measures around their homes to help eliminate mosquito-breeding areas, including:
• Dispose of cans, buckets, plastic containers, ceramic pots, or similar containers that hold water.
• Properly dispose of discarded tires that can collect water. Stagnant water is where most mosquitoes breed.
• Drill holes in the bottom of outdoor recycling containers.
• Have clogged roof gutters cleaned every year as the leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to plug drains.
• Turn over plastic wading pools when not in use.
• Turn over wheelbarrows and don't let water stagnate in birdbaths.
• Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools not in use and remove any water that may collect on pool covers.

If a resident has stagnant pools of water on their property, they can buy Bti (short for Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis) products at lawn and garden, outdoor supply, home improvement and other stores. This naturally occurring bacterium kills mosquito larvae, but is safe for people, pets, aquatic life and plants.

Additionally, these simple precautions can prevent mosquito bites, particularly for people who are most at risk:
• Make sure screens fit tightly over doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out of homes.
• Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks when outdoors, particularly when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, or in areas known for having large numbers of mosquitoes.
• When possible, reduce outdoor exposure at dawn and dusk during peak mosquito periods, usually April through October.
• Use insect repellents according to the manufacturer's instructions. An effective repellent will contain DEET, picardin, or lemon eucalyptus oil. Consult with a pediatrician or family physician for questions about the use of repellent on children, as repellent is not recommended for children under the age of two months.
