The Blue Mountain School District "Rock" Controversy reaches far and wide beyond Schuylkill County.
--------------------------------------------------------

Published by:  The Coal Speaker

The video.. the video.. the video..

That started it all:

What you just heard if you chose to watch was Blue Mountain Superintendent David Helsel telling Pennsylvania state lawmakers earlier this month that some classrooms had been given river stones to throw at would be school shooters.

Reaction is being heard far and wide–it began with WNEP fueling the controversy but has continued in even more ferocity since.

Multiple American publications have picked up the sound bite.. As have global news markets.

THE MIAMI HERALD.TIME MAGTHE BBCWashington POSTNew York DAILY NEWS

The buckets are just one of the measures that Blue Mountain School District in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, has put in place this academic year, along with security cameras, secured building entrances and fortified classroom doors, Superintendent David Helsel said in a telephone interview.

“We didn’t want our students to be helpless victims,” Helsel said. “River stones were my idea. I thought they would be more effective than throwing books or book bags or staplers.”..

Sticks and stones can break some bones..
But they will not stop guns.

BUT..before you go and throw rocks from your glass house, consider this fact: The way it was told may not be the full story.. The Pennsylvania State Police actually endorse a plan of this nature. If kids are trapped in a room, there are a few crucial seconds before they encounter a shooter. If the shooter stops firing for a seconds, they can use rocks or other objects to fight back. It is a last-ditched effort before death type of time. Additionally, if they pelt rocks at a shooter they could they could also earn valuable time to distract him long enough ..

Remember.. this is the type of scenario that could occur in the final moments of a child’s life during a school shooting. Consider that.

Perhaps it’s fair to say in this regard, though public excoriation is prevalent, Blue Mountain’s plan may actually Rock.

Blue Mountain School District Increases Security After Social Media Frenzy

The Blue Mountain School District increased security at their schools Monday morning after recent comments from their Superintendent has caught the attention of social media.

The following message was sent from Superintendent Helsel to parents Sunday evening,

As all of you are aware, recently there has been a great deal of media attention brought to Blue Mountain School District. This attention was due to social media posts that took comments out of context and misrepresented our actual planned response to armed intruders (particularly with the planned use of stones). This unfortunate circumstance has increased our concern regarding the possibility that something may happen because of the media attention. Starting tomorrow and into the near future, we have arranged for additional armed security for our buildings. We will continue to reevaluate this situation moving forward. Please be assured, the safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance to us.

Superintendent Helsel made headlines across the United States last week after a video surfaced online of him speaking at a State Education Hearing.

At the hearing, Helsel stated that the district has placed buckets of rocks for students to throw as a last resort to an intruder in their schools.

After a story ran from WNEP, social media was buzzing to the point that the story was picked up by National News Outlets such as ABC News and Fox News.

Yes is Coming to Penn's Peak

YES, one of the biggest bands in prog rock history and true pioneers of the genre, today (March 26) revealed the dates and details for this summer’s 50th Anniversary North American tour titled #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of YES.

Tickets for the 30-plus date outing, which kicks off June 5 and 6 with a two-night engagement at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL, will go on sale to the public beginning this Friday, March 30 or Saturday, March 31, with select shows going on sale in early April. A handful of additional dates will be announced soon.

“Much has changed since I joined Yes in 1970, but the core elements of the band have remained consistent,” shares guitarist Steve Howe. “We want to mark this anniversary with a tour that encompasses some of our best-loved work and revisit a few classic pieces that have been lost for a while. We look forward to sharing the 50th anniversary with the fanbase, playing classic songs that celebrate the broad musical style of Yes.”

"I have been blessed to be a member of this amazing band’s rhythm section for the past 46 years, mostly in the company of my great friend Chris Squire, and latterly alongside Chris’ chosen successor, Billy Sherwood, who is receiving recognition for stepping into Chris’ pre-eminent bass and vocals,” says drummer Alan White. “Each night we are pausing to reflect on Chris’ importance to Yes, his desire that we should continue to share Yes music on stages worldwide, and the specific dedication of ‘Onward’ to his huge memory. I'm so grateful to continue to be performing on stages for our dedicated fans and look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary in America. It has been a great ride!"

“Being a member of the band during its 50th anniversary is a privilege and honor,” adds Geoff Downes (keys). “It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the caliber and invention of the musicians who have forged the legacy of Yes since 1968, always pushing the boundaries. Playing on stage with founder member Tony Kaye to launch the 50th anniversary [on this year’s Cruise to the Edge] was a wonderful experience for the band and our fans, to whom we dedicate this special tour.”

During this summer’s “Evening with YES” shows, YES—Steve Howe (guitar since 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015)—will perform a special classic hits concert to commemorate the landmark occasion.

The cross-country trek will take the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees to Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles (June 19 at the Ford Theater), San Jose, Detroit, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Boston, Staten Island, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Orlando, among many other cities, before wrapping July 28 in Atlanta. Geisinger and St. Luke’s Teaming Up to Build New Hospital in Schuylkill County

St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN) andGeisinger are partnering to build a new acute care hospital in southern Schuylkill County – on Route 61 near Orwigsburg.

The fully-licensed, 80-bed hospital will include an emergency department and a full range of specialties and services.

Groundbreaking will occur this spring and the hospital will open late next year.

“Geisinger’s commitment to caring means providing compassionate, comprehensive health care to our patients close to home,” said David T. Feinberg, M.D., MBA, Geisinger president and CEO. “We know that many patients are leaving Schuylkill and Berks counties for hospital services. Our growing partnership with St. Luke’s will not only expand the range of health care services in that community but perhaps, more importantly, will offer greater convenience so that patients, including many of our Geisinger Health Plan members, will receive the care they need right where they live.”

The three-story, 120,000-square-foot hospital will be located on Paramount Boulevard off Route 61 in West Brunswick Township near Orwigsburg.

This is the first time in Pennsylvania that two health care systems have agreed to build and equally co-own a new hospital.

Under terms of the agreement, the new hospital will operate under SLUHN and Geisinger as a joint venture, with funding and governance shared equally between the two non-profit health systems. Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke’s will build and manage the hospital. SLUHN and Geisinger, headquartered in Danville, Pa., will both contribute physicians and specialty support staff and expertise.

“The new hospital in Orwigsburg will emphasize the strengths of St. Luke’s and Geisinger, extending the best value in health care – that is, the highest quality at the lowest cost – to more residents of Schuylkill County and surrounding areas,” St. Luke’s President and CEO Rick Anderson said.

The two systems enjoy a history of collaboration, including an insurance partnership. Also beginning July 1, Geisinger's Life Flight service will provide emergency medical air transportation for the entire St. Luke’s system.

Additionally, both organizations have provided services to Schuylkill, Berks and Carbon county residents for years.

St. Luke’s currently (since 2000) has a hospital in Schuylkill County – St. Luke’s Miners Campus. St. Luke’s Miners Campus, to which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) recently awarded its highest five-star rating, is a 44-bed acute care hospital with a Level IV trauma center and 48-bed skilled nursing facility, located in Coaldale. In Hamburg, Berks County, which is south of Orwigsburg, a St. Luke’s Care Now walk-in center and a primary care office exist. St. Luke’s Gnaden Huetten and Palmerton campuses, which recently joined SLUHN, are located in nearby Carbon County.

Geisinger Orwigsburg’s outpatient clinic on Hollywood Boulevard offers comprehensive primary care for adults and children, including chronic disease management, laboratory, pharmacy and X-ray services. Geisinger offers primary care and specialty services, including outpatient surgery and radiation oncology in Pottsville, as well as primary care offices in Frackville and Mahanoy City.
