North Schuylkill Elementary Students Raising Money Through Boosterthon

The North Schuylkill PTO and students are raising money through Boosterthon this week.

Students kicked off the event last Thursday with a pep rally, held by Boosterthon team members, to begin the 8 day event.

Students are raising money through donations from community members and businesses. Sponsors can pledge toward the number of laps that each student will walk/run or make a flat donation. The Glow Fun Run will take place on Friday, in the elementary gym.

Throughout the week, students will be actively involved in grade level huddles. There, the Boosterthon teams are teaching students character building lessons along with the importance of physical fitness.

So far, students have raised over $10,000 for the school and are working their way towards their $15,000 goal.

All money raised goes directly back the students for yearly field trips, end of the year carnival, in school programs, and any other items or events that the students need.

North Schuylkill Elementary currently has 1057 students in grades kindergarten through sixth, with 44 homerooms.

Mandy Reed, PTO President, stated that this is the first year NSE has done Boosterthon. Previously, they have done the traditional book sales with candy or magazine sales, which never had a good turn around. "We are excited to have Boosterthon in our school these next 2 weeks. The kids are excited, the staff is excited, and the PTO is amazed at the generous donations, that have come in for our students. We have a large elementary school and as PTO we make sure that all our students are taken care of. In the beginning of each year, every student is provided with a free spirit shirt. We also send every student on their field trip. That is our biggest expense for PTO, which is why we have chosen to try Boosterthon."

If you would like to donate towards the event, message on Facebook or email Skook News for more details at skooknews@outlook.com.

Auburn Woman Places in Statewide County Fair Scrapbook Competition

$

For the second time in the past two years, Linda Wolfe of Auburn has placed second with her scrapbook of the 2017 Schuylkill County Fair.

Linda was awarded a second place for the scrapbook at the recently held Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs convention held in Hershey.

Linda’s hard work pay off again this year with a thick binder filled with photos and captions focusing on the 2017 Fair theme of “Country Scenes – Blue Ribbon Dreams. For the past 10 years Linda has been displaying her talent through the fair’s scrapbook retelling the fair week in pictures and decorated captions within the pages of the scrapbook. This is Linda’s fifth award in the last 6 six years, including first place in 2014 and 2015 and second place in 2013 and 2016.

The scrapbook must follow the theme of the fair; cover all areas of the fair and blend agriculture, commercial and entertainment aspects; include table of contents and list of fair officers; have photo identified; and is also judged on layout, overall appearance and creativity.

For the 2017 scrapbook, Linda used a beautiful setting in the country and a young 4-H exhibitor displaying his livestock animal with his winning ribbons to illustrate the “Country Scenes- Blue Ribbon Dreams” theme. She also highlights events and performances that happen at the fair.

Linda says it takes her about four months to build the scrapbook which starts right after the Fair ends each year. Linda’s hard work has paid off with another special award for her talent of telling the 2017 Schuylkill County Fair story.

In addition to Linda placing second at the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs with her scrapbook, the Fair’s Princess Haley Rymarkiewicz and the Little Miss Ella Grace Frantz created a table top display for the convention focusing on the same theme of “Country Scenes – blue Ribbon Dreams.” This Table top display also took a second place amount all the 106 fair displays from around the state.
