Man Faces DUI Charges After Early Morning Crash near Shenandoah

A Shenandoah Heights man facing DUI charges after a crash that closed a highway early Friday.

According to the Shenandoah Police, the crash occurred around 12:30am, Friday, when Robert Arbushites, of Shenandoah Heights, was driving south on Route 924 just north of Shenandoah when his vehicle went off the highway and struck a tree and a sign.

Police say Arbushites was driving under the influence and fled the scene.  He was later apprehended on the Heights Hill.

Arbushites was not injured in the crash but the vehicle, a courtesy vehicle from a Sands Dealership,  required towing from the scene due to heavy damage to the front of the vehicle.

Columbia Fire and Shenandoah Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Nathan A. Garber, 77, of Barnesville, PA, passed away Thursday, December 21st, at St Lukes Hospice House, Bethlehem.

Nathan was born in Barnesville, PA on May 20, 1940, a son of the late Flossie (Fritz) Garber and Paul Garber Sr.

Graduated from Mahanoy Twp High School Class of 1958.

Nathan was a member and elder of St. Peters Church, Locust Valley, and a life long member of the Ryan Township Fire Company.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.

He had retired from Dana Corp. Reading in 1999.

He was the husband of Anna Mae (Sedlock) Garber.

Nathan is also survived by two sisters, Ida Belke, of Ottsville ; Louisa Kessler, of NJ, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by brothers Paul, Theodore, Quinten Garber, and sisters Dorothy Cunningham, and Geraldine Harrison.

Religious Service at Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Mahanoy City, PA, at 3 pm on Saturday, December 30th, with Rev. Dave Shoobridge officiating.

Sara L. Bowers, 71, of Pottsville, passed away on Thursday morning at Orwigsburg Center, Orwigsburg.

Born in Pottsville, on July 26, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Sara (Schappell) and Charles Wetzel, Sr.

She was employed as a sewing machine operator, retiring in 2001.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph T. Bowers, Sr., on January 27, 2012; and brother, Charles Wetzel, Jr.

Sara is survived by a daughter, Marie Bowers, of Orwigsburg; two sons David C. Bowers, husband of Angela, of Pottsville; and Joseph T. Bowers Jr., husband of Kimberly, of Palo Alto; grandchildren: Ciera M., Gabrielle A., Brianna J., Davin C., and Aspen R. Bowers; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 28th at 11:00 a.m. at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville , with Pastor Peggy Sue Pfeffer officiating. A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Zion's Red Church Cemetery, Orwigsburg.

Authorities Searching for Inmate that Escaped from Schuylkill Federal Prison Camp

Authorities are searching for an inmate that escaped from a Schuylkill County Federal Prison Camp.


According to the U.S. Justice Department, Harvey Shaner, 51, escaped from a Federal Prison Camp located near the Minersville exit of Interstate 81 on Friday just after 7:30pm.

Shaner is described as being white, 6' 4" inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds.

Shaner is in prison for federal wire fraud charges.

Anyone with information or may have seen Shaner should call U.S. Marshals at (570) 346-7277.

Boil Water Advisory Lifted for Pine Grove Residents

A boil water advisory for Pine Grove has been lifted.

According to the Pine Grove Water Department, on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at approximately 1:30 PM, a repair was being made to a water main near on E. Mill Street.

A boil water advisory was issued for all water customers.

On Saturday morning, the water department announced that the advisory was lifted for all residents.

Dawn M. (Goho) Huggins, mother, sister, niece, of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones at Lehigh Valley Hospital Salisbury Twp., having fought a courageous battle against cancer, at the age of 35. 

Survived by her husband, Lesroy Huggins of Fayetteville, North Carolina; beloved daughter, Amara Marie Goho of Tamaqua; sisters, Pamela A, Goho, and Ashley R. Goho both of Tamaqua; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive Dawn. 

A 2000 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Dawn attended L.C.C.C. before enlisting in the United States Army serving honorably for four years before entering the Army Reserves. She worked for the Deparment of Defense as a Human Resources Specialist at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, NC, until recently moving to Ft. Leavenworth in KS. 

Born Tuesday, May 18, 1982 in Coaldale the daughter of the late Robert W. Goho, and Sharon R. (McCarroll) Goho. She was also predeceased by her sister, Tammy Rose Goho. 

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. of 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pennsylvania 18252. (570) 668-2550

Marlene M. Kunkel, 73, of Washington Street, Tamaqua, PA died on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at home. 

Born in Coaldale, PA on November 23, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Marlin A. and Margaret (nee Flemming) Fritz. A 1962 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Marlene worked at Fegley's Mini Mart where her infectious smile had patrons referring to her as Mom and Gram and she had a very positive impact on all who walked through the door. 

She loved spending time with her children and sister and visiting casinos. Marlene was Protestant by faith. 

She is survived by her children, Raymond Kunkel and his companion, Sheila McArdle of Summit Hill, PA, Margie Kunkel of Tamaqua, and Michael Kunkel of Tamaqua; grandchildren, Brianna Kunkel, Brenna Kunkel, Kylie Huegel, and Becca Kunkel; and her sister, Shirley Kane of Tamaqua with whom she resided. Marlene was preceded in death by her step dad Hugh Gallagher who raised her as his own daughter. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 30 at the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua with The Rev. Kevin Roberts officiating. 

Interment in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown, PA will follow the service. Call 9-11 AM on Saturday at the funeral home.

Peter P. “Polka Pete” Calabrese, 90, a resident of Manor Care Health Services Pottsville, died Sunday morning at the Manor.

Born in Silver Creek February 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Charles and Rose (Notaro) Calabrese.

He was a graduate of the former Blythe Township High School where he played various sports. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville and a member of the former St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Middleport American Legion, the Black Diamond Navy Club, Minersville, and a former member of the Coal Cracker Polka Association. In addition to his memberships he enjoyed bowling.

He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired as a welder from the former Steco Trailer Sales, St. Clair.

Polka Pete was an avid dancer. His proudest moment was when he won a Ballroom Dance Contest at Merv Griffin’s Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. He was awarded a vacation at Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Marie (Pezzetti) Calabrese (1978); brothers Frankie and Mickey Calabrese; and sisters Jane Grant and Rose Belko.

He is survived by his children Margaret Daniels wife of Robert, Pottsville; Peter Calabrese husband of Constance, Auburn; Rosemarie Jefferson wife of Kurt, Greenwood DE; and Daniel Calabrese husband of Charyl, Mechanicsburg. He was affectionately known as “Pop” to his 9 grandchildren, Robert husband of Denise; Bryan husband of Kelly; Kristie wife of Daniel Fanelli; Alexandria; Kurt husband of Angela; Lindsey wife of Jeff Clark; Daniel husband of Nicole; Anthony husband of Theresa; and Nicholas husband of Danielle; and “Pop -Pop” to his 16 great-grandchildren, Kira, Dylan, Kaitlyn, Emily, Bryan, Caleb, Daniel, Sophia, Cole, Colton, Lila, Jase, Vincent, Dominic, Isabella, and Remington.

He is also survived by a brother Charles Calabrese, Palo Alto; sisters Mary Nazar, Middleport; JoAnne Palko, Pottsville; sister in law Helene Calabrese; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM Saturday December 30 at St. Patrick RC Church, Pottsville. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects Saturday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 AM at the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home 515 West Market Street Pottsville PA. Interment with military honors will be held in St. Joseph RC Cemetery, Pottsville.

Jean “Jeanne” M. Joyce, 73, Girardville passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday morning.

Born in Shenandoah she was a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Jean Marquardt Gower.

She was a member of the former St. Joseph’s Church, Girardville, now St. Charles Borromeo Parish, a 1962 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School, member of the ladies dart team of Fr. Sheridan Council, Knights of Columbus, Girardville. She was a baby sitter for all her nieces and nephews and beyond and was an avid Notre Dame football fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Joyce in 2008, her brother Thomas Gower, her niece Tomee Leigh Gower, two nephews; Patrick Yackera and Jason Peppas and a sister-in-law Mary Ann Gower.

Jeanne is survived by three brothers; James( Barbara ) Gower, FL, Bill Gower, Girardville and John ( Jane ) Gower, Frackville, her sister Carolyn wife of Joe Yackera, Girardville, sisters-in-law; Joni Gower, Girardville, Betty ( Joe ) Subick, FL and Marie ( Bob ) Breininger, Germanville, Nieces; Sherie ( Rick ) Boyer, Sharon (Rick) White, Erin Gower, Kitsa ( Phil ) Gorseline, Lisa Jeffries, Carol Arnold and Gina Neary, Nephews; Dimitri ( Cindy) Peppas, Bill (Pam) Gower, Brian (Michelle) Gower, Joseph Yackera, John Gower, Harry, John and Fr. David Hreshko, Dominic, Andrew and Michael Breininger also by “ Her Kid “ Jason ( Tiffany) Burke and their children Mikayla and Michael, beloved cat “JJ”, several grand-nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Girardvile, with Rev. Paul Rothermel, pastor, as the celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fountain Springs. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. with scripture service at 7:30 and Friday morning from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m..

Power Outage Reported in Schuylkill County Early Christmas Morning

UPDATE: Over 1,000 Homes Without Power Christmas Morning in Schuylkill County

The high winds overnight and early Monday have been causing power issues in Schuylkill County.



As of 11:15am, PPL is reporting that 1,849 customers are without power.

The majority of the outages are reported in the Rush Township, Tamaqua, and East Brunswick Township areas.

Also reporting smaller outages are Cass Township, Hegins Township, North Manheim Township, North Union Township, Union Township, and Washington Township.

Other areas of the county have reported their power flickering as well.

An estimated repair time has not been reported.

One Injured in Monday Morning Crash in Walker Township

One person was injured Monday Morning in a crash in Walker Township.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, around 10:15am, Autumn Eberts 18, of Andreas was travelling on Wildcat Road in Walker Townshp when she lost control on a snow covered curve and struck a tree.

Eberts suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital via New Ringgold Ambulance.

A 15 year old passenger was not injured.

The Walker Township Fire Department and Soley's Towing assisted at the scene.

Bertha Loftus, 84, of Mahanoy City, PA, passed away Monday, December 25th, suddenly, at the home of her son.

Bertha was born in Mahanoy City, PA on August 23, 1933, a daughter of the late Arvesta (Houser) and George Smulligan.

Bertha graduated from Mahanoy Township High School class of 1951.

She was a member of Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish Mahanoy City.

She worked at the Mahanoy City Cigar Factory and retired from Service Electric Mahanoy City.

She was wife of the late John Loftus.

Bertha is survived by a daughter, Susan, of Nesquehoning; four sons John, of Frackville; David, of Mahanoy City; Patrick, of Mahanoy City; Kenneth, of Mahanoy City; and by a sister, Theresa Urso, of Lansford, and a brother, Paul, of Mahanoy City;

She is also survived by 11 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren.

Proceeded in death by a daughter Debbie, and brothers George, Pete, Augustine, Andrew, Frank, John, and sisters Katherine, Mary, Elizabeth, Ulga, and Helen.

Eleanor Shucavage, 94 of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at St. Luke's Miners Memorial in Coaldale, Pennsylvania. 

Widow of John F. Shucavage who passed away on November 24,1993, she is survived by: daughters, Marie Zehner wife of Robert of New Ringgold, Janice Fredericks wife of Thomas of Tamaqua; sons, Robert J. Shucavage of Tamaqua, Joseph Shucavage of Tamaqua; brother, Stanley Slotwinski and his wife Mary Ann of Warminster ; 6 grand children; 8 great grandchildren. 

A member of St. Peter & Paul R.C.C. of Tamaqua, Eleanor retired from the former Sprite manufacturing of Tamaqua. Eleanor enjoyed listening to Polkas and going out to eat with her family. 

Born Wednesday, February 21, 1923 in Mary-D, the daughter of the late Ignatz, and Eleanor (Tansky) Slotwinski. She was also predeceased by; sister, Rosie Slotwinski; brothers, Frank, and John Slotwinski.

Patricia J. Doerr, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, 73 years of age, a resident of Green Lane, Andreas, Pennsylvania passed away suddenly on Monday, December 25, 2017, at home. 

Survived by her husband of thirty-seven years, Robert P. Doerr; sons, Brian Klusman and his wife Shaleen of Tamaqua, Robert Doerr of Philadelphia, and Michael Doerr and his wife Angela of Coaldale; daughters, Nancy Doerr of Lansford, Jennifer Boone wife of Jeff of Philadelphia; brother, Robert McNamee and his wife Diane of Philadelphia; eleven grandchildrn; eleven great grandchildren 

A graduate of Lourdes Mount High School, Scranton. Patricia retired from Sigma-Aldrich Coporation a Chemical Distribution Company in Fogelsville. 

Catholic by faith, Pat and her husband Robert traveled often to Ireland. She was a devoted animal lover and enjoyed the companionship of her dogs; Carson, and Finnegan. 

Born Wednesday, August 16, 1944 in Philadelphia the daughter of the late Vincent, and Marie (Gore) McNamee. She was also predeceased by; sister, Carol DiAscro; brother, Vincent McNamee.

Frank P. Romanelli, 88, Frackville, passed away peacefully Sunday at Broad Mountain Health and Rehabilitation Center, Frackville.

Mary Joann Chiodo, 95, of Pottsville, passed away Sunday morning at York Terrace, Pottsville.

Born in Mt. Carbon on October 23, 1922, she was a daughter of thelate Rosa (Ferraiolo) and Antonio Chiodo.

She was a 1943 graduate of Pottsville High School and a member of St. Patrick R.C.C. and a member of the former St. Joseph Parish. At St. Patrick R.C.C. shebelonged to St. Pats Seniors.

Mary was a garment factory worker at Biever's, Schuylkill Havenfor over 40 years, retiring in 1982 and also a former beautician from her homeshop.

She was very active in the Pottsville community. She was amember of Catholic Daughters Santa Marta, where she served as past Presidentand secretary; Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, where she served aspast President; Sons of Italy; Good Sam Caring Corners; and BPW. She was a volunteer eucharistic minister at Good Samaritan Hospital and did miscellaneous volunteering through the years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers: Carl, Anthony, Angelo, and Sam.

Mary is survived by a brother, John D. Chiodo, who she wasespecially close to and with whom she spent her entire life; sister-in-law,Ethel Pfleuger; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 29that 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C.C., 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville with Msgr. EdwardJ. O’Connor as celebrant.

A viewing will held on Friday morning at Lord-Bixler FuneralHome, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St. at 9:30 a.m until the procession willleave for church.

Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Pottsville.

Gail D. Dolan, 77, of Minersville, passed away unexpectedly at Lehigh Valley Hospital -- Schuylkill, East on Christmas Eve.

Born in Pottsville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Edna Blum Heisler. She was a 1958 graduate of Pottsville High School, and has resided in Minersville since 1961. She spent her career in food service, having worked at the former Zula Grocery Store, at Way-Mart and at Plain & Fancy Donuts.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Pottsville.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 48 years, Stephen Dolan, in 2009; her sister and brother-in-law, Norma and John Turner.

Surviving are her daughter, Donna Horn, (spouse, Greg), Minersville; two granddaughters, Jessica Colna (spouse, Edward, Jr.), Minersville, and Amber Horn (fiancé, Joseph Wilson), Rockaway, New Jersey; four great-grandchildren, Camryn, Jason, Ava and Carter; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM from Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury Street, Minersville. Friends may call from 6:00 AM. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. The family prefers contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Ruth Bixler, 91, of Harrisburg, passed away Monday, December 25, 2017. She was born September 4, 1926, the daughter of Herbert and Flora (Densley) Holmes. She is the stepdaughter of Isaac Jayes.

Ruth was a seamstress and retired from the State of Pennsylvania, Dept. of Motor Vehicles. She is a member of the Tree of Life Lutheran Church, Harrisburg.

Ruth met her husband, Garvin Bixler, Sr. while he was in the service for World War II and was stationed in Leicester, England. They were married there on June 6, 1945. She came over to the United States on the ship SS Brazil along with 600 war brides on March 9, 1946 and because a U.S. Citizen.

Ruth was active for several years in the Harrisburg Chapter of the Sweet Adelines. She also volunteered at the Poly Clinic for several years and she was also the Chaplin of the Ladies Auxiliary for the American Legion, Post 1001 for many years.

Ruth is survived by her son, Garvin Jr. and wife LuAnn of Clarks Summit, PA; grandson, Garvin III and companion Nicole Truchan of Pittsburgh PA; one brother Garvin Jayes of England; two sister's in-law Maureen Jayes of Leicester, England; Dora Wertz of Muir, PA and by her long time companion, Harry Dolby of Harrisburg, PA and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by husband; her parents and stepfather; two brothers, Dennis Holmes and Trevor Jayes, England; and one sister, Joyce Duncannon, PA.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29th at 2:30 pm from the Chapel of the Dimon Funeral Home, Inc., Tower City with Pastor Annette Shutt. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery, Muir. Visitation will be from 2:00-2:30 at the chapel.

Jarrod Michael Orowski, 38, of Lykens, passed away Monday, December 25th at his home.

Born in Harrisburg, January 27, 1979, a son of Michael Orowski, Lykens and Robyn Nolen, Harrisburg.

Jarrod attended Upper Dauphin Area High School.

He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, Lykens. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan and a Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Michael Orowski; maternal grandmother, Roxanne Alleman; two nephews, Riley Kreiser and Jayce Hendricks.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Brooke Hendricks and her husband Dave, Mifflintown; one nephews, Hunter Hendricks; two nieces, Faith and Honor Hendricks; paternal grandmother; Joan Mahoney Orowski, Lykens; maternal great-grandmother, Mae Walkinshaw, Williamstown.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 29th at 11:30 am from Our Lady Help of Christian Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Opoki as celebrant. Visitation will be from 11-11:30 at the church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Declen Joseph Bohner, 7 day old son of Brett Bohner and Chanel Shoop of Tower City died unexpectedly Friday, December 22nd.

Declen was born at the Hershey Medical Center on December 15th.

Two Teens Die in Berks County Crash on Tuesday Afternoon

Two teenagers died in a crash in Berks County Tuesday Afternoon.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Hamburg, the crash occurred around 4:30pm on Bricker Road in Upper Tulpehocken Township.

Police say the one vehicle crash occurred when a 17 year old was travelling on Bricker Road and the driver veered to the left travelling off the roadway and struck a tree.  The impact caused the vehicle to split in half into a field.

Two passengers, Sean Orner, 18, of Bethel, and Shanon Althouse, 18, of Womelsdorf both suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still being investigated.

Second Annual Kielbasi and Pierogie Drop Scheduled for New Years Eve

This Sunday, December 31st, Shenandoah will hold it's 2nd Annual New Years Eve Kielbasi Pierogie Drop!


Drop time will take place at 7:00pm in coordination with the Greenich Meridian. Organizers chose the early time so younger children may enjoy the event as well.

The event will take place at the American Legion Memorial Garden on North Main Street, next to the American Legion.

The event is being supported and organized by the Downtown Shenandoah Inc.

Everyone is welcome join in the event.
