"Prelude to the Coalcracker” Headlines Big Diamond Speedway This Week

$

As the season winds down at the Big Diamond Speedway, the “Money” races start to pick up.

Last Sunday it was the “Fayash Memorial” race for the Sportsman with Matt Stangle picking up the win. This Friday August 25 at the speedway it will be the annual “Prelude to the Coalcracker” feature for 358 Modifieds. Of course both of these races lead up to the biggest weekend of the year on Friday 9/1 and Sunday 9/3 when the speedway presents the annual “Coalcracker” weekend.

But first things first, this Friday is the Prelude to the Coalcracker. The mighty Steel and Metal Service Center 358 modifieds will compete in a 40 lap feature paying a cool $4,600 to the winner. Despite the weather issues that have seemed to target the speedway this year, the modified action has been superb each and every week. Point’s leader Craig Von Dohren leads the way and has been super fast each and every week. Behind Von Dohren you have a lot of hungry veterans looking to grab a share of the big money. Drivers such as Jeff Strunk and Ryan Godown each with one win this season are ready to get after it along with wily veterans Rick Laubach, Billy Pauch Jr and Duane Howard. Those three drivers have been shut out of the winner’s circle so far this season and would like nothing better than to grab a win going into the Coalcracker race weekend.

Two-time winner Brett Kressley will be looking to add to his win totals along with track regulars Shawn Fitzpatrick, Kevin Beach Jr, Scott Albert, Jared Umbenhaurer just to name few. The always fast Ryan Watt will also be making a trip to the speedway this Friday to try and get his new car dialed in for the following weekend. Also hearing that the “Handler” Doug Manmiller will also be making an appearance at the speedway this Friday driving for the injured Kyle Borror in the #B4.

The 358 Modifieds will also be taking part in a series of challenge races this Friday.

*This Friday’s show will be an OPEN DRAW for the Modifieds. All Modifieds will receive 100 show-up points.

While the modifieds will take center stage on Friday. The U.S.S. Achey Sportsman along with the Savage 61 Road Runners and the No Sweat Service Group Street Stocks will also take to the track on Friday. Each of these divisions has provided great racing action this year and will looking to do the same for the balance of the season.

As always, the gates open on Friday night at 5:30pm with warm-ups beginning at 7:30pm. General admission for Friday night’s show is $22.00, Senior admission is $20.00 and as usual kids under 12 and active military with ID are admitted free.

The track has deemed this Friday night as a “PURPLE OUT” night. Please wear your Purple!!

*Rain date for this show is Sunday August 27th. Heats will start one half hour earlier on Sunday at 7:00pm.

Most area schools start the 2017-2018 school year on Monday August 28th and to help raise awareness for safe travel of all students in the city of Pottsville the Pottsville Bureau of Police will be conducting extra mobile and foot patrols during the first days of school.

Mayor James T. Muldowney and the police department will once again be utilizing a program they have named “Safe School Start.”

During the first days of school uniformed officers’ independent of regular patrol duties, will participate in specialized patrols concentrating on highlighting public awareness and enforcement of existing PA Vehicle Code restrictions with particular emphasis being placed on school travel safety issues such as school zone safe speeds, distracted driving, and duties at a school bus.   Officers will also be focusing on promoting safe pedestrian travel practices by students.

Chief Wojciechowsky and the Pottsville Bureau of Police ask everyone to cooperate in creating the absolute safest environment for our students by employing extra caution and vigilant safety practices on a regular basis throughout not only the first week of school but the entire school year.
  • Leave Early
  • Always be alert
  • Look out for all children as if they are your own
  • Please remind another person to do the same.

Red Cross Issues 10 Ways to Help Keep Kids Safe as They Head Back to School

$
0
0
School will be back in session soon and the American Red Cross has steps everyone can follow to help make the trip back to the classroom a safe one.
Safety should be the top priority for all students, especially younger children and those heading to school for the first time. Whether riding, biking or walking to school, the Red Cross wants everyone to arrive and then return home safely.
TOP TEN SAFETY TIPS

If children ride a bus to school, they should plan to get to their bus stop early and stand back from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive. Other safety steps include:
  1. Wait to board the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the driver or attendant has signaled to get on.
  2. Tell children they should only board their bus - never an alternate one.
  3. Always stay in clear view of the bus driver and never walk behind the bus.
  4. Cross the street at the corner, obey traffic signals and stay in the crosswalk.
  5. Never dart out into the street, or cross between parked cars.
  6. Younger children should use car seats or booster seats until the lap-shoulder belt fits properly (typically for children ages 8-12 and over 4’9”) and ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old.
  7. If a teenager is driving to school, parents should mandate that he or she use seat belts. Drivers should not use their cell phone to text or make calls, and should avoid eating or drinking while driving.
  8. Some students ride their bike to school. They should always wear a helmet and ride on the right in the same direction as the traffic is going.
  9. When students are walking to school, they should only cross the street at an intersection. If possible, use a route with crossing guards.
  10. Parents should walk young children to school, along with children taking new routes or attending new schools, at least for the first week to ensure they know how to get there safely. Arrange for the kids to walk to school with a friend or classmate.
WHAT DRIVERS SHOULD KNOW

Drivers should know what the yellow and red bus signals mean and be aware that children are out walking or biking to school and slow down - especially in residential areas and school zones. Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is getting ready to stop and motorists should slow down and be prepared to stop. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign indicate the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off. Drivers in both directions must stop their vehicles and wait until the lights go off, the stop sign is back in place and the bus is moving before they can start driving again.

Parents should also make sure the child knows their phone number, address, how to get in touch with their parents at work, how to get in touch with another trusted adult and how to dial 9-1-1. They should also teach children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know.

American Heart Association Awards Both Lehigh Valley Schuylkill Hospitals

Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street and Lehigh Valley Hospital S. Jackson Street have again received the Get With The Guidelines®-(GWTG) Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

It is the eighth consecutive year that the American Heart Association has recognized the hospitals for achieving such status.

Specifically, the GWTG award recognizes the hospitals for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines for patients with heart failure.

Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure is a quality improvement program that helps hospital teams follow the most up-to-date, research-based standards with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. Launched in 2005, numerous published studies have demonstrated the program’s success in achieving patient outcome improvements, including reductions in 30-day readmissions.
Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients. These measures include evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies, such as ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants, and other appropriate therapies. Before patients are discharged, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

“We are very proud of this program and what it means for patients,” says Cathy Sophy, RN, Administrative Director of Quality. “LVH–Schuylkill is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our heart failure patients. Implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program helps us to accomplish this goal by tracking and measuring our

Both hospitals also received the association’s Target: Heart FailureSM Honor Roll. Target: Heart Failure is an initiative that provides hospitals with educational tools, prevention programs and treatment guidelines designed to reduce the risk of heart failure patients ending up back in the hospital. Hospitals are required to meet criteria that improves medication adherence, provides early follow-up care and coordination and enhances patient education. The goal is to reduce hospital readmissions and help patients improve their quality of life in managing this chronic condition.

“We are pleased to recognize the hospitals of Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill for their commitment to heart failure care,” says Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program. Get With the Guidelines research has demonstrated the impact of lowering 30-day readmissions and reducing mortality rates.”

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million adults in the United States suffer from heart failure, with the number expected to rise to eight million by 2030. Statistics show that each year about 870,000 new cases are diagnosed and about 50 percent of those diagnosed will die within five years. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications or devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.
