Argall Seeks to Reform Process of Electing Lieutenant Governor

Senator David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill) held a press conference Tuesday discussing his proposed legislation which seeks to reform the process of electing the lieutenant governor in Pennsylvania.

“Right now, we are witnessing a tumultuous relationship between our current governor and lieutenant governor; both parties have acknowledged their lack of communication with one another over the course of several weeks at a time,” Argall said. “While this is certainly not the first time a forced political marriage between our top two leaders of the executive branch has failed the people of Pennsylvania, continuing this kind of arrangement will hurt our efforts to streamline state government and decrease the state’s staggering $3.1 billion budget deficit.”

Argall’s proposed legislation, which has already garnered bipartisan support from his colleagues in the Senate, would amend the state’s Constitution to allow gubernatorial candidates to select their running mate following the primary election – subject to the approval of their state committees – which is a similar process to how presidential candidates select their vice presidential running mates.

Argall notes the goal of this legislation is to foster better cooperation, communication and trust between the governor and the lieutenant governor. “By allowing the governor to provide input in selecting a lieutenant governor, a stronger relationship will be forged, taxpayer money would be saved and these two important members of the executive branch can lead more effectively and efficiently on behalf of Pennsylvania’s citizens.”

The Schuylkill County Agribusiness Committee has announced the 3rd Annual Schuylkill County Grown Cooking Contest, being held at the Schuylkill County Fair, which is the perfect setting to focus on locally grown agricultural products.

The contest will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. under the south overhang of the Main Exhibit Hall.

The Schuylkill County Grown program is designed to promote locally grown produce and other farm market products, such as milk, eggs, and even Christmas trees. Many people today are very interested in where their food comes from and how it is produced or grown. This program offers a way for producers and businesses to mark those products that are grown right here in Schuylkill County.

There will be two categories, adult and youth (under 18). For adults, we are asking you to prepare a slow cooker dish of your choice. Youth participants will be making a quick-bread, which can be in the form of a loaf, muffins, cake, etc. All entries must be prepared ahead of time, and be ready to serve at the time of the contest. The main rule for both categories is that each entry must contain at least three items that were grown in Schuylkill County. These could be items from a local farm market, retail store, or from your own garden.

To enter the contest, or for more information please contact Melissa Seigfried at the Schuylkill Conservation District at 570-622-3742 ext. 3324 or via email at mseigfried@co.schuylkill.pa.us. More information can also be found by visiting the Fair’s website at www.schuylkillfair.com or by visiting the Fair’s Facebook page or the Schuylkill County Grown’s Facebook page. Registration deadline for this contest is July 29th, 2017.

Pottsville Police Partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters for "Bigs in Blue"

$

During the summer of 2017 The Pottsville Bureau of Police is partnering with Big Brothers/Big Sisters (BBBS) of Schuylkill County to reintroduce a program called “BIGS IN BLUE.”
Approximately twenty boys and girls currently without a permanent “big” from the BBBS program will participate with at least thirteen different Pottsville Bureau of Police officers -ranging from the chief through the newest officers- in various activities designed to build teamwork, trust and accountability in the children while fostering a strong relationship between the officers and the youth.

“The Pottsville Bureau of Police is very cognizant of our oath to not only protect but also serve our community. This cooperative endeavor with BBBS is an absolutely fantastic opportunity to do so in a manner that is beneficial in so many different ways. All the involved officers have volunteered to be involved during their personal off-duty time and this strongly signifies the understanding we have as an organization of the importance of being involved with our community not only on a professional level, but on a personal level as well.”

Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky says that in 1994 he participated as a patrolman in a similar program under the direction of Chief Dale Repp and BBBS Director Vince Kulbitsky.

During the fall of 2016 he reached out to Doug Allen, the BBBS Schuylkill County Executive Director and also a personal friend, and they immediately agreed that this was a program worth pursuing for both of their agencies.

Mayor James T. Muldowney quickly pledged his full support and a schedule was created that allowed for challenging and exciting experiences for the kids.

The program kicked off Friday, June 16th with a Lehigh Valley River rafting experience and concludes in August with tours of local first responder facilities and a picnic.

Also included during that time frame will be events involving indoor rock-climbing, hiking, team challenge camp, and a Reading Phillies trip.

Tax deductible donations are being accepted to cover the costs of the programs and can be facilitated by contacting Doug Allen at bbbs.doug@verizon.net or by calling BBBS at 570-622-0174.
