Kayak, Canoe, and Cardboard Boat Races Scheduled for July 4th at Sweet Arrow Lake

On July 4th a new event will take place at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park and it should be loads of fun for the whole family.

A kayak, canoe and cardboard boat race along with safety and other demonstrations will begin at 9am at the park clubhouse. There will be number of races including Canoe and Kayak Sprints, Slaloms, Endurance, Log Tow Race and Cardboard Boat Races. There will be 5 age classes for the Canoe and Kayak events and Cardboard Boat races may have a 4 person team and 2 persons must ride in the boat.

The event is free and open to the public as participants and spectators. All events will begin at the clubhouse, leaving the boat access area open to fisherman. Refreshments will be available for sale. Preregistration is recommended and as an incentive, the first 50 to do so will receive a free event t-shirt. All information and the registration forms are available on www.sweetarrowlakepark.com. Registration the day of the event will be from 8 to 8:30am for those not pre-registered.

“The 4th of July has traditionally been a family get-together picnic day and we thought what a great place to get families together plus have a lot of fun than at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park,” said event cochair Brad Fessler. Fessler, an avid outdoorsman and kayaker, volunteered to put together the events when the Sportsmen Advisory Board suggested there should be a fun, water based event at the lake in addition to fishing. ‘We wanted to get kids and their parents involved so many of the canoe events are 2 people with the youngest member indicating the age class entered. We also wanted a fun but competitive event; didn’t want to charge a fee and the winners will have bragging rights. Kind of like the activities and games at a family picnic’, Fessler commented.

The length of the event will be determined by the number of participants but the event will begin about 9am with a water safety and plan of action of activities. Also, there will be a demonstration by the Schuylkill Haven Dive, Rescue and Recovery Team which will also serve as the safety crew.
Spectators are welcome and with the extensive shoreline and dam breast area, viewing the event will also be a blast. Canoe and kayak rentals will be available but supplies are limited. Event participants should bring their own watercraft and personal floatation devices. “Logs will be provided”, quipped Fessler, referring to the log tow race. A log will be attached to the canoe or kayak and paddlers will have to ‘tow’ the log around a course.

The members of the Sportsmen’s Advisory Board are excited to be offering this water based event at Sweet Arrow Lake Park as another family fun filled outing for all to enjoy. And as a reminder, the Pine Grove Community Band will perform their patriotic collection beginning at 6pm.

“We encourage people to come out and enjoy the entire day”, stated Drew Kline, Park Supervisor.

Hotdogs, Hamburgers and drinks will be available and will benefit the Schuylkill County Sportsmen’s Association.

Pine Grove Garden Tour Announced

South Schuylkill Garden Club announces a garden tour of the Pine Grove Area.

This will be a first of hopefully many tours to come as the Garden Club explores the many beautiful gardens in the southern region of Schuylkill County.

The tour is slated for June 24 rain or shine. The tour consists of eight private and two public gardens in and around the Pine Grove Area. The tour will be operational within the hours of 9AM to 2PM. Tickets for the tour may be purchased at one of the two tour starting places. First up for tickets is at the Butterfly Garden at the Union Canal in Pine Grove Proper. The second available place to start your tour providing tickets is east of Pine Grove at 167 Dad Burnham Road Pine Grove. This is the Gardens of Kenneth and Ardela Newswanger. Advanced tickets may be purchased at the Pine Grove Theater or by contacting Carol at 570.345.2423, Jeanne at 570.385.4423 or Helen at 570.739.3689.

One of the featured gardens on the tour will be the gardens at Blue Bottle Farm. Blue Bottle Farm is nestled in the valley of Flat Hill outskirts of Pine Grove, the Gardens at Blue Bottle Farm consist of informal mixed borders of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. The plantings follow no strict order; instead they are constantly evolving as all gardens are. The plants have all been lovingly collected by the gardeners and placed to take advantage of the view sheds, which include the former dairy barn and silos to the East, a three-acre pond and forest to the south, and the mountains to the west. Cobalt blue bottles accent many of the beds as an art form, and provide color even on the bleakest winter day. In addition a forest path winds along the pond and through the forest where it crosses streams, and wanders through soft sweeps of hay scented ferns.

A seasonal waterfall can be viewed just before the path emerges from the forest. Before returning to the gardens, the path offers elevated views of the fields, farm buildings, and gardens. The gardens are landscaped by Alan Petravich and Koa Kanamee with Nancy Petravich as the chief grounds keeper.

Come and enjoy this garden and many others of the Pine Grove Area on June 24 between the hours of 9 AM and 2 PM.

Further information about the Garden Tour put on by the South Schuylkill Garden Club is available by calling Carol at 570.345.2423 or Jeanne at 570.385.4423.

Man Struck While Riding Bicycle

On Wednesday May 17, 2017 around 3:15am, Pottsville Bureau of Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Claude A Lord Blvd (SR61) and East Norwegian Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, Officers found Matthew Madeira, 31, of Mahanoy City, laying in the roadway bleeding from the head. Madeira received medical care at the scene by Pottsville EMS and was then transported by EMS from the scene for further treatment at a medical facility.

The investigation revealed that Madeira had been operating a BMX style bicycle eastbound on the south side of the 100 block of E. Norwegian Street when he disregarded a steady red traffic signal facing his direction of traffic and attempted to cross Claude A Lord Blvd. Madeira then traveled into the path of a 2012 Kia Forte operated by a 25 year old man from Coal Township, Northumberland County, that had been traveling northbound on SR61 and had a steady green signal. The impact caused Madeira to be thrown from the bicycle into the roadway and caused minor damage to the Kia, including a broken windshield. At the time of the accident, Madeira was wearing dark in color clothing and his bicycle failed to display the required lighting for operation during darkness.

The Kia was towed from the scene due to the window damage.

Two independent witnesses were located and interviewed, and provided investigators with complete information about the accident and causation factors.

The investigation is also pending the receipt of surveillance footage from A-Plus. Upon receipt of this data and medical records, appropriate charges will be filed by Ptlm. Michael Messner.

Rick Laubach is the defending winner of the race.

The MITM event is the one of many big-paying events for the modifieds. A fight between two women at a kindergarten graduation on Tuesday led to both receiving citations.

According to North Schuylkill officials, after the Kindergarten graduation ceremony Tuesday afternoon, two adult females had a verbal and physical altercation on school district property.

Both ladies were quickly escorted away from children and citations were filed.

"We are disappointed in the behaviors and will not tolerate this type of conduct. We ask that all visitors please act as role models for the students. We do understand that this was an isolated incident and the vast majority of parents and family members always act accordingly during district events. We are proud of our Kindergarten students and their teachers, it was an excellent ceremony." said Superintendent Robert Ackell in a statement.

Parents who witnessed the incident commended North Schuylkill staff in their response and how they handled the situation.
