Stephen Edward Bondura, age 72, of Port Carbon, PA passed away Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at the Lehigh Valley Health Network Hospice in Allentown.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on October 19, 1942, he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary Alice (Oldt) Bondura.

Stephen was a graduate of Dobbins Technical High School in Philadelphia, Class of 1960. He served in the U.S. Army in the Army Engineers Battalion 86 Headquarters Company as a SP5 in the Vietnam War from August 1966 to July 1968. He worked as a Carpenter for the Local Union 1865 out of Philadelphia.

Stephen is survived by his twin brother Emil W. Bondura, Port Carbon, PA; brother William N. Bondura and his wife Ruth Anne Bondura, Philadelphia; brother John F. Bondura, Pottsville; sister Sr. Kathryn A. Bondura, SSJ, Minersville; great niece Jessica L. Banach, Philadelphia; and other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon at 9:30AM on Thursday, September 10th, with Rev. Lorraine Heckman officiating.

Relatives and Friends are invited to visit with the family on Thursday morning from 8-9:30AM at the Funeral Home.

Interment with Military Honors will be held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Sisters of Saint Joseph Retirement Fund, 9701 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118-2694;www.ssjphila.org.

Esther Ann Steranko, age 87, of Brigantine, NJ, formerly of Port Carbon, passed away with her loving family by her side on Thursday, September 3rd, 2015 at her home.

Born in Port Carbon, PA on January 15, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Stanely and Anna (Lukach) Shunosky.

She was a graduate of St. Stephen's High School, Class of 1946.
She worked as a secretary for the Algomated Garment Workers Union and she was a member of the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Port Carbon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Raymond Steranko on April 15, 1999 and a sister Helena Shandor.

Esther is survived by 2 sons: Raymond F. Steranko and his wife Dolly, Port Carbon, PA and Stephen J. Steranko, Brigantine, NJ; a grandson Nicholas Steranko and his wife Molly, and 2 great-granddaughters: Olivia and Aubrey Steranko, all of Port Carbon, PA; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Port Carbon at 10AM on Wednesday, September 9th, with Rev. David W. Karns officiating.

There will be no procession from the funeral home or calling hours before Esther's Mass.

Interment will be held private at convenience of the family at the St. Stephen Cemetery in Port Carbon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Esther's 2 great-granddaughters Olivia's and Aubrey's College Funds c/o Raymond Steranko, 410 Coal Street, Port Carbon, PA 17965.

Josephine M. Miskar, 93, of Mahanoy City passed away Sunday afternoon at Shenandoah Manor Senior Living Community.

Josephine was born September 25, 1921, daughter of the late Fred and Clara (Menapace) Martini.

She had graduated from East Union Township High School, class of 1939.

She had worked for many years at Eagle Brothers from which she retired.

Josephine was a member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Mahanoy City.

She was the wife of the late Charles Miskar who passed away in 1968.

Josephine is preceded in death also by a son Charles in 1996, also an infant son Charles, and a sister Marie Luciani.

Survived by sons Gerald and his wife Andrea, New Jersey, John Barry and wife Marilyn, Hazleton, and daughter Carolyn Petterson and husband Eric. Also by6 grandchildren Kristen Ischinger and husband Tim, Charlene Gawronski, Nicholas Miskar and wife Amy, Eric Petterson, Brian Miskar and Madison Miskar. 2 Step grandchildren Daniel Schreffler, and Joanne Reside. 8 great grandchildren, Justin, Julia and Jack Ischinger, Ava and Drew Gawronski, and Brooke, Brielle, and Brynn Hannis-Miskar. An Aunt Mary Wetzstein. Also nieces and nephews.

Office of Devine Liturgy will be held at St. Mary’s Byzantine Church in Mahanoy City at 10 am Thursday September 10th.Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 PM at the Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. Mahanoy City and from 9AM Thursday at St. Mary’s Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mahanoy City where a white dove will be released in her memory. Family prefers donations to St. Mary’s Church.

Alma Schreffler

Alma made her final journey home to heaven on Sept.6, 2015 surrounded by her beloved family. Alma was born on Feb.20, 1920 in Rough and Ready. She was the daughter of Gurney and Minnie (Wiest) Starr. Alma married the love of her life Marlin J. Schreffler, February 1939. She was a kind, gentle woman with a heart for the Lord who touched everyone she met. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who valued time spent with her family above all else. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, bowling, baking for her family, and listening to music her family created. She was an avid reader and K&S softball fan. She rarely missed a ballgame. Alma is survived by a sister, Ruby Wood; three children and their spouses, Maynard (Ellen) Schreffler, of Dornsife, Janice (Edward) DeFacis, of Trevorton, and Marlin R. (Linda) Schreffler, of Dornsife; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Schreffler, of Dillsburg; nine grandchildren, Cindy, Wendy, Kerry, Gordon, Monique, Curtis, Jule, Jason, and Justin; eighteen great-grandchildren, Danielle, Jacob, Zachary, Kaitlyn, Collin, Connor, Gordon, Gabriel, Lydia, Adam, Aaron, Austin, Leah, Shyla, Leslie, Kyrsten, Duncan, and Ashley; and one great-great-grandson, Owen, her final joy in this life. Alma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Larry, one sister, Blanche Oxenrider, and three brothers, Russel, Earl, and Nevin. Alma was a member of Himmel's Church. Friends will be received on September 12, 2015 between the hours of 9:00-11:00 am at Himmel's Church, Dornsife with a funeral service following at 11:00 officiated by Pastor Jane Compton. Arrangements are entrusted to Stephen Rothermel Funeral Home. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff of the A wing at Mountain View Nursing and Rehabilitation for their loving care of Alma for the past five years, and to the B wing nursing staff for their attentive care during her final days. Also, a special thank you to the VNA hospice staff, Karla, Melody, and Cindy.
