Friday Night Results from Big Diamond Speedway

Results from Friday night at Big Diamond Speedway.

When Ryan Godown decided to race this season in the USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint series in 2018, the team definitely had two dates circled on their busy schedule in red. Those two dates being the events scheduled at his Friday night home track of Big Diamond Speedway. Godown knew that even with his inexperience in the division, that running on a track he runs on regular basis would help even the playing field against drivers who have had much more seat time in the wingless beasts.

It was Red, White and Blue Autos night at the speedway and the “Ringoes Rocket” thoughts proved to be right on the money as he held off a determined Eddie Strada to win the feature event in only his second outing in the series. Timmy Buckwalter shot to the lead early from his fourth starting spot and appeared to have the car to beat early on in the 25-lap main event.

The caution was thrown for the second time on lap four for a spinning car and on the restart the “Ringoes Rocket” vaulted to the lead from the third spot as the leader Timmy Buckwalter slowed with smoke coming out from under the hood of his sprinter causing Buckwalter to call it a night. Godown continued to lead as Strada was making his way to the front and on lap 14 moved into the runner-up spot.

Strada gave it all he could to catch up to the high flying Godown and was able to get up alongside of him on the last lap forcing Godown to use all of his track knowledge he has accumulated over the years to hold off the hard charging Strada. Godown was able to hold off his challenger and earn his hard fought first victory in the series. Strada was a close second with Chandler Leiby, Joey Biasi and Delaware winner Steven Drevicki rounding out the top five.

Collegeville, PA’s Alex Bright was the winner of last night’s USAC Midget feature event. Bright earned his impressive win coming from the eighth starting spot in a race that went caution free to take home the big win.

Following Bright across the line were Brent Arndt, Steve Buckwalter, Adam Pierson and Ryan Greth

The Savage 61 Roadrunner feature event was won by Kris Ney over Chris Holland, Jim Kost, last week’s winner Mike Reichert and Shawn Mulhall.

In the No Sweat Service Group Street Stock division, it was Chris Heller taking home top honors for the night over Elvin Brennan III, Dean Hine, Kody Sites and Jesse Krasnitsky.

Next Friday night May 25th, the URC Sprint Cars invade the Big Diamond Speedway for their first visit of the year along with a full card of Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Road Runners.

Pottsville Still Looks to Add Movie Theatre; While Original Plan Folds

While a plan to open a new Pearl Theater in Pottsville has folded, city officials are hopeful to bring a movie theater to the city.

Late last week, it was announced that the original plan that was announced back in January to build a new Pearl Movie Theater on top of a rebuilt Mahantongo Parking Deck in Pottsville has been scrapped.

In a statement from the City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar to the Republican Herald, "The movie company was unable to garner the financial resources needed to make the project a reality".

Pearl Theater owners Bruce Taffet and Gina DiSanto stated back in January that the project was expected to have been expensive but were hopeful to secure the funds to build the 8 screen movie theater.

Taffet and DiSanto are still looking to rebuild the theater, formerly located at the Schuylkill Mall, somewhere in Schuylkill County, with the Pottsville area still on the list.

Savas Logothetides, Director of the Pottsville Area Development Corporation, also stated "This is not indicative of Pottsville not having a market for a movie theatre. We are still working diligently to try and bring a theatre to the city."

The project to rebuild the deteriorating Mahantango Parking Deck will still move forward, just without the theater.

Demolition of the Parking Deck is scheduled to start in the summer.

An off duty New Jersey State Trooper/Marine died in a crash that occurred on Interstate 78 in Berks County on Sunday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police the crash occurred around 6:30pm on Sunday, May 20, 2018 in the Eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 near Mile Marker 40.7 in Greenwich Township, Berks County.

Police say the crash occurred while Brian McNally, 30, of Bedminster, NJ was traveling in the left lane of eastbound I-78.  Traffic began to slow due to an active construction zone in Lehigh County.

McNally was attempting to move from the left lane to right lane when he struck the rear end of a trailer to vehicle driven by Nuritdin Juraev, 33, of Windsor Mill, MD.

Both McNally's vehicle and the trailer became engulfed in flames.

Juraev was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

On Monday morning, State Police announced that McNally was an off-duty New Jersey State Trooper and also a Marine.  McNally was travelling back home from a duty weekend in the reserves.

Gillingham Charter to Receive Mini-Grant Funds to Pay for Breakfast for All Students

$
0
0
As part of Governor Wolf's School Breakfast Initiative to help more children start their day with a healthy meal, he announced today $900,000 from the inaugural round of grants to help 200 schools make breakfast available to all students and expand options for the children.

Out of the 200, that were announced statewide, Gillingham Charter, Pottsville, was announced to receive $4,620.00.

“A healthy breakfast helps students begin the school day ready to learn and succeed,” said Governor Wolf. “These school breakfast grants are an investment in the lives of thousands of children. When kids start the day with the nutrition they need, they grow up smarter, healthier, and stronger – and that means a smarter, healthier, stronger Pennsylvania.”

First Lady Frances Wolf will join Education Department Executive Deputy Secretary Dr. David Volkman and school advocates at Lawnton Elementary School in Harrisburg this morning to celebrate the announcement. Improving education from preschool through higher education has been a priority for the governor and First Lady since day one.

“Ask any teacher and they’ll tell you that food is a basic school supply, just like textbooks and pencils. When kids struggle with hunger, it’s harder for them to learn,” said First Lady Frances Wolf. “This important funding will go to the schools and the students who need it most to ensure they have a healthy, consistent start to their day.”

Governor Wolf proposed the School Breakfast Initiative as part of his 2017-18 state budget. Schools will use the grants to increase and sustain breakfast participation by 20 percent by implementing or expanding alternative breakfast options, such as grab-n-go breakfast, breakfast in the classroom, and second chance breakfast during study halls.

“These grants will help schools initiate a new breakfast program, or bolster an existing one using innovative delivery systems,” said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. “Whether it is an elementary school that implements Breakfast in the Classroom for younger students, or a middle school that opts for grab-and-go, all students benefit from schoolwide breakfast programs.”

Today, one in five Pennsylvania children struggle with hunger. To address the problem, the Wolf administration in 2016 set a goal of ensuring that 60 percent of students who benefit from free and reduced priced school meals also participate in school breakfast by 2020.

Currently, over 3,000 Pennsylvania schools report that they offer breakfast, however fewer than half of those schools offer alternative serving methods. Only 50 percent of students who receive free or reduced lunch also receive breakfast.

"If it is our job as educators and anti-hunger advocates to do what’s best for children, that means ensuring students get a nutritious breakfast every morning,” said Bill Simonson, School Breakfast Outreach Coordinator for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “These grants will equip schools with the necessary funds to start alternative models and ensure more students get a healthy meal at school when they need it most. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is proud to partner with the Governor's Office and Pennsylvania Department of Education on this initiative."

Schuylkill County Awarded HOME Program Grant

Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) has announced that Schuylkill County has been awarded a HOME Program grant in the amount of $471,622 from the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development.

The funding will be used to create the Schuylkill County Weatherization Deferral Program, which will provide needed housing repairs and energy efficient measures to low income households.  This is a pilot program created to provide additional financial assistance to homeowners who do not meet eligibility requirements for the Weatherization Program.  The program will be administered by Schuylkill Community Action, which is one of only four agencies in the Commonwealth selected to participate.

“Schuylkill County has some of the oldest housing stock in Pennsylvania.  Our lower income and fixed income elderly residents often do not have the finances needed to fix serious health and safety hazards in their homes.  This program will provide essential repair assistance to our neighbors who are in the most need,” said Argall.  “Investing resources in a home will prevent another abandoned building that needs to be demolished in a few years.  It is a win for everyone,” he noted.

“This is another great tool to help in the fight against blight in our county.  This program will furnish the needed funds to assist with repairs and projects to increase the assessed values of homes, while creating a better quality of life for both the home owner and their neighbors.  The county has partnered with Schuylkill Community Action on a number of grant projects over the years with a positive experience in each project,” according to a statement released by the Schuylkill County Commissioners.

“We are very happy to participate in this program,” Schuylkill Community Action Executive Director Ted Dreisbach said. “It will help many residents who otherwise would have no option other than to continue living in an unsafe environment.”

After being a huge hit last year, the 2nd Annual Orwigsburg Kite Festival is returning in July.

The event is being sponsored by Josh Rex State Farm Insurance Agency in Orwigsburg and will take place from Noon until 6:00pm at the Blue Mountain Middle School Recreation Fields, located at 669 Red Dale Road, Orwigsburg.

Those attending can bring their own kite or a get free kite while supplies last.

The event will also offer food, games, face painting, ice cream from Twisted Sisters, and live music from Sisters in Faith.

"The goal of the event is  to provide an opportunity for the community to have an annual event that brings families together for an activity they will remember year after year! Myself and the Arts Barn cover the expenses with the exception of the food. So this gives the community and surrounding communities an opportunity to come out and have a day of fun flying kites and playing games with no cost." said organizer Josh Rex.

"State Farm has been their for the Community for almost 100 years, providing insurance and financial service needs. So, with our commitment to family values, I want to thank everyone in the great Schuylkill county for all of there support!" Rex added.
